I have very high hopes for the FE24-70. I'm mostly a landscape photographer shooting on a tripod while hiking or even backpacking. I'm dearly hoping for a modern incarnation of the Zeiss 35-70/3.4 with the slow speed as a tradeoff for optical quality. The FE35 and FE50 give me hope for the design philosophy of the FE series (if it turns out that there is a uniform design philosophy...).
If the FE24-70 turns out to be the lens I'm hoping, I'll buy it and sell the ZA 24-70/2.8 and the CZ 35-70/3.4 with no regrets. Life seldom works out so nicely, though!
My purchase of A7 actually depends on how good this lens turns out.
I can't justify buying 35 and 55...not at this point...i may after they show me the 85 and the wide zoom in flesh...
I handled this lens along with A7 and A7r for the first time in a photo fair where Sony had a big presence. The lens is not very big and its light also. No time to judge the image quality.
Mine is scheduled to arrive on the 28th or 29th of January.
Sonys own MTF cuves tell us that it should perform better than the SAL2470Z but corner sharpness at 24mm won't be great because of heavy astigmatism.

...and many of us are looking forward to your feedback and comparison to the 28-70!

which 28-70 do you mean?
Clearly beaten by the A mount 24-70 2.8 zoom, which is outstanding. However, I don't know how reliable the focus is, in some cases the corner crops are sharper than center.

Looking at the rear of the lens mount in that review shows the lens to be made in Thailand. Is this a first for a higher end, Zeiss branded Sony lens I wonder?

some of the central 70mm images are not as sharp as could be expected of even a medium quality zoom so that makes me doubt their carefulness with focusing but from the sample images it becomes clear, that the corners at 24mm never become really good.
I received a mail that mine won't arrive in one but in 7 weeks. This didn't stop them from charging my credit card.
This company is under really bad management in some areas. Too bad tey make the best cameras in my eyes .

Thanks. I didn't know that. Seems like the 35 FE is made in Japan? Anyway, seems there is some high end lens production for Sony now in Thailand.

I don't know. In some of those shots the FE looks pretty bad yet in others it looks better than the competition. I really think some those shots aren't correctly focused.

Yes, there is a ton of information and some great sample images but it was hard to draw any meaningful conclusions with the side by side comparisons.
I agree. At 24mm, Some ISO 200 crops look better than ISO 100...
Also, we don't know if the tester refocused on the corners for the edge resolution test. Perhaps the FE 24-70 f/4's field curvature is higher than the other lenses.
I will be getting the FE 24-70 f/4 and test it against the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II.
