The result of a major solar storm manifested itself in form of Aurora borealis on March 17. The activities of the northern lights were observed even at lower latitudes the world over.
Talking about getting lucky in that respect, it happened during our trip to Iceland. However, the cloud cover at the location was predicted to be severe. Relying on the forecast from the Icelandic Meteorology Department, we drove for about 1.5 hours to the west where the cloud cover was predicted to be less. The cloud cover resulted in snow storm that we had to travel through for around 30 minutes or so. Finally, when cloud cover was behind us, we looked for a location, setup our gear and started shooting. In total, we did that at 3 locations on the way back to our lodging place. Too bad, we could identify any nearby water body to include reflection shots . At the end the cloud cover became too thick and we headed back. By the time we got back it was past 4:00AM.
This was my second time around seeing and taking pictures of the northern lights. The first time, it was also in Iceland almost 2 years ago, the prevailing color was green, the most common color of the northern lights. Back then, the light show moved or shall we say, danced pretty fast. Like a curtain, it moved forward/sideways. We only got some reddish colors in addition to green back then but they were faint. To the naked eyes, the light show of 2 years ago was more spectacular. This time around, the colors were more spectacular. In addition to green and red, we could see blue and purple, which are very seldom seen/recorded. The reds were so intense in some cases. The light show was still visible even with city lights in the frame. It is remarkable to see that the surrounding landscape took on the prevailing colors of the northern lights.
