Hey Bob...just sent you a pm on the Minolta mod. The R is a very, very good lens with lots of presence! But, the Minolta, especially for the price, hangs right there with it. A few others asked about a comparison, I just haven't got to it yet. I will hopefully, this upcoming weekend...

Thanks Gregg . . . I'll give it a try. I wonder if the lens can be set to f/2.8 while in Macro mode. That would be an added bonus!

Be careful with the Mod. When I did it, I think I inadvertently removed both stops and it allowed the aperture ring to turn far enough that the micro ball bearing (the clicker) popped out and vanished into thin air. I ended up cannibalizing a junky lens to replace the bearing. I then put it back to stock. It has to be the best $50 lens around!

Indian God of Peace statue by Carl Milles - 1936. Housed in the Ramsey County Courthouse, St Paul, Minnesota.

Scale is a little hard to judge; the statue is 38 feet tall (~12 meters). That's me reflected in the ceiling, near top center.
