I'm assuming you have the camera setup on a tripod, near a bird feeder, with a remote release, but what aperture are you using to ensure the bird is in focus?

those are all wide open, i've done some others with the 35/1.4 and 58/1.2 wide open as well.
i aim at the point i want the bird to be in and focus there and just wait for the bird to be where i want them. it helps that i set up a stick next to a suet feeder that most birds land on while they wait in line for the feeder.
