My 55FE finally showed up. One snap @f1.8 on the way home, a detour through a dark alley.

Charles, my 55 also hunt at low light. Especially close range, it is just keep failing locking focus.

my copy has very small amount of decenter, did you guy test it? What to do? Buy more copy and cherry picking?

Shots from last night. A7r and FE 55, in low light conditions. I am having a lot of difficulty in making sure features at infinity are nailed focus wise, in low light. AF is not accurate here, so I revert to MF. I am getting one shot in four that are 100% in focus, with shutter speeds at 1/125s. I would appreciate any help here? Last shot at 6400 ISO, f/1.8, pushed +1.5 in PP'ing.
Also the EVF with the FE 35 and 55 work perfectly well, compared to the issues I was having with the dark

Thanks Michael. The AF does not bother me, as I switch quickly to MF, but in MF mode I focus at f/1.8, and there appears to be some difference between the scale showing and what I would expect infinity to be at. This is possibly an issue, for focusing distance objects with MF. The AF is good light is no problems, when I look for infinity here.

We regards, to decentering, I have not checked this yet. It appears fine, at f/5.6 and f/8.0 for beach scenes so far. I will need to check with a brick wall at some point! I really don't wish to be testing lenses all the time, which will work and won't!!

Yep, same thing, the scale is different/shorter than reality during MF. It doesn't bother me

Yes, exactly the same issue! I lock in with MF at infinity, but the scale is showing less, like 32m.

Pretty scenery Charlie. How is the snow pack in your area relative to where it should be at this point? Here we have but 20 - 40cm when there should be 200 - 300cm on the local slopes by now.

I will keep this camera, although it is hard to accept that my Leica M wide angles suck.
Love the focus capabilities and high ISO, Forget field curvature, forget noise...

Your Leica M wideangles do not suck. They just make a poor combination with this camera.

Nice captures, by the way. The white balance does not seem very consistent between the images though.

You are right, of. course. They are great on the Monochrom, and I dont plan to sell any M lens ...

The A7R has better White Balance than my M9. Color is off because I like it just this way.

@Samuli nervous bokeh and slightly different characteristic make me prefer G45 to slightly recalculated ZM50P those all look great to me and I think we all know kids like their lenses with a bit of electricity in the background (jk sebboh)

G45 definitely has "electricity" in boke. I don't think I can use it for my forest shooting, maybe it works on easier urban boke scenarios. However now I have crazy sharp landscape lenses from 35 to 55 (FE35, G45, FE55), can't wait for summer and do more landscapes (or forestscapes) maybe, to not get bored to all boke shooting (highly unlike that it will happen )

I would never trust contrast based AF, when situation requires ISO 6400, to scene where there are no clear contrast edges. I assume you tried to focus scene like your night cityscape photo, and it would be enormous luck if your camera could pick the lighs of buildings from the noise, which all look about the same when you are ISO 6400 situation.

Focus scales have not worked for 10+ years for accurate work.

Why not just manual focus to lightspots (make the spot go as small as possible, then it's sharpest)?

BTW. Practical hint for low light situations; disable the "Live View Display" --> "Setting Effect ON". Then your camera tries to focus wide open instead shooting aperture. This of course doesn't suit for lenses, which have focus shift, but I haven't seen anyone report focus shift with any of the FE-lenses.

Contax G90 seems extreme competent on all areas, where f/2.8 is sufficient and actual macro lens is not needed. Reminds me of C/Y mount Sonnar 2.8/85, but this one is better wide open than the C/Y version I had was.

First series: long/medium distance boke. For my use this is "main usage", and any lens not performing on this finds more time on shelf than my camera back bag. As far as I see this is about as good as it gets. Very surprised that <200EUR lens performed this well. Due to light weight and small size, this lens is most likely permanently located in the bag.

Boke quality, contrast and colors, contrast edge issues (CA etc.) and sharpness are all better or equal than Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 90mm f/3.5 SL (EF mount). Voigtländer is better on close-ups and "semi-macro" since G90 focuses only to 1 meter. Also Voigtländer is nicer to use due to the EF-mount (I prefer electronic aperture, and of course real helicoid is better than adapter turning autofocus skrew...).

That is actually extremely accurate compared to the scale of manual focus lenses. What's more important is; does AF hit optical infinity focus? Or is it just the scale that's off?

I always shoot wide open at low light, so for me it's the other way around. When shooting stopped down in good light, I'm not sure I get perfect focus all the time because DOF is large.
The problem with "effect off" is that you can't see exposure compensation. It's so stupid that I barely believe it. How the heck did they think here?

Edit: The G 90 looks very nice! I wonder if there is something similar with M mount.

I would assume Leica Elmarit-M 90mm f/2.8 is very similar. I have the Elmarit-R, and it's pretty nice from boke perspective but it's softer until f/5.6 when it matches G90 level. Then we of course have Zeiss Tele-Tessar T* 4/85 ZM and new Summarit-M 90mm f/2.5, but they are quite a lot more expensive. And naturally there is APO-Summicron-M 90mm f/2.0, but it's way more expensive and I have no clue does it have as nice boke.

I would like to try as well the Leica APO-Telyt-M 135mm f/3.5, but they are so expensive that it makes no sense. Specially since I already have Zeiss 135mm APO. The non-APO 135mm Leica M-lenses most likely don't offer performance I require. Therefore it's highly unlike that I bother to check Leica M 135mm. But never say never...

Four photos from today with the Zeiss ZE 50 Macro-Planar, this lens works very well with the A7r in my opinion. First one is plain, second one stitched and the last two are focus stacked.
