Helena...very nice shots with the 18/4. Makes me wish I liked wide angle! It's just not my forte...
Werner...incredible Carhedral shots. The nikkor 15 looks awesome!
Michiel...the Mitakon 50 .95 does quite well with bokeh, IMO. The environment those particular shots were taken(inside the UPS facility where I work) has very different lighting, which lent to the bokeh.
Agnostic...the tire track shot is really nice.
Olaf...I like the plaque shot. I was stationed in Bad Kissingen during the late '80s, and was actually on the border between what was West and East Germany when everything happened with the borders and Wall coming down. Very interesting time! I actually have a picture of an East German border scout( GAK) shaking hands with a W. German citizen shortly after the border was opened!!
Bob...everyone touts the Rokkor 58 for wide open shots, but stopped down its an incredible lens! Great cityscape!

The Garbage Dump.

Last week, I purchased a Minolta 135mm, F3.5 from KEH, and rather than sharing a bunch of photographs taken with the lens, I thought I would describe my overall satisfaction.

I received the lens in good shape. The glass was greasy from the shipping plastic, but I cleaned it. The lens is a third generation MD, which seem to work the best on the Sony A7R. At aperture of F3.5, the lens exhibits a nice sharp shallow focus, and become sharper all the way up to F22. It is lightweight, and small, and the coatings top quality, for a lens built in the early eighties, with typical Minolta accurate color rendition, and shallow depth of focus.

It is a sharp lens, but has its downfalls, the greatest of which are its chromatic aberrations, seen in the photograph, if one knows where to look for them. Some may claim that F3.5 is a downfall on its own, but those who say that likely struggle with photography anyway, because unless one is taking pictures in the dark, anything below F4 is pretty much useless, and the correct procedure for blurring the background of a photograph, is to shoot a longer lens, not a wider aperture.

Compared to the Canon 100mm F2.8, the lens is sharper where in focus, but has a much shallower depth of focus, and will not capture the entire photograph in sharp focus. This is likely to do as much with focal length, as anything. However, the Minolta is a better performer in the bright sun. It is all about the coatings, bright sun, and for that, the third generation Minolta’s are just better than the older Canon FD lenses, but a picture on a cloudy day, or in fog, the Minolta lenses look downright dull and lifeless, by way of comparison.

Compared to the Minolta MC 135mm, the lens is not as good with chromatic aberrations, about equally as sharp, has tremendously better color (some may say contrast), and is much smaller and more lightweight.

Experiences or opinions from others welcome.

What an inspirational thread this has been for me, and I learnt a lot. Thanks all for that! The diversity in styles and subjects is the main attraction - something that is usually less so in brand specific topics.

I also liked learning about all those lenses. A big name however is underrepresented, and that is Pentax. So here's one with the FA28mm 2.8 @ 5.6 (I think). AF lens so ergonomically not that great, image quality is though. Apart from pronounced curvature of field at MFD.

Hello Dale... I'm really impressed about the rendition of MD 35-70 Macro in your backlight picture... Could you please tell me more about that lens? Which exact model I have to search on the Bay? Thanks in advance.

Not sure if anyone answered your question yet:

What you're looking for is the Minolta MD 35-70mm f/3.5 (constant aperture) Macro. It is a very good lens (I have one myself), performance is into prime territory and they are very affordable. The lens design was used by Leica for it's Vario Elmar R 35-70mm f/3.5 (not so affordable). The Macro version is the second version Minolta built of this lens, it uses the same optical formula but adds the macro capability.

Many, many thanks... after my "prime" choice, I have to admit sometime could be more practical to have a zoom so I'm looking for an affordable option. I saw many good pictures from Michiel with Contax N 24-85 but I was so impressed about Dale words related to flare resistant of the Minolta.

P.S.
After a quick research, I found a Minolta MD 35-70mm f/3.5 Macro at 160 euro and a Contax N 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 at 390 euro... any more suggestions? I pay attention at flare resistance because is the only defect of my wonderful Canon FDn 35mm f/2
Thanks in advance.

Careful, the Contax N 24-85 needs an adapter that provides electronic control of the aperture. The aperture control on the lens is more like "aperture control by wire"...so a dumb adapter doesn't work.

The MD 35-70 3.5 Macro is a very nice lens. Mine is amazingly sharp at 50 and 70, it's very good at 35 but gives a little up in the very deep corners. (On an a7R.)

The C/Y 35-70 3.4 is amazing as well.

160 euro is far to much for the Minolta MD 35-70 zoom.
If you look around, you can buy them for around € 60,--
I bought mine even for € 40,--
A quick search I saw one on ebay with not such a good condition on the outside for € 40,-

BTW I prefer the Contax N zoom!

Thanks Tim, very important thing to consider... especially for my wallet ... extra focal range but also extra budget. What about distortion of the MD? Quick look to C/Y... seems rather expensive

I haven't noticed any distortion that's bothersome.
