I recently acquired a small MSM Nomad star tracker. Saturday night, I took it for its maiden outing to Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia at 4,863 feet. My goals for the night shoot were (1) to test the tracker and (2) to gain some experience using it as I had not used a tracker before. I spent a couple of hours up there shooting around midnight. This is a downsized copy of one of the images I captured. The tracker performed pretty well. I a bit less so but with more practice I expect to get better at it. Steve ...Show more →

I agree with Shac. It's a beautiful image!
I posted an image a week or so ago of my wife's artichoke plants that went to seed and then turned a beautiful purple. This is the full set.

Exquisite image, Steve! I can't wait to see more images after you have gained some practice using that star tracker...

Thanks so much for the kind words!
RA is a fun place to shoot. Your shots are CRAZY good. Perfect DOF, blur, background separation. Are you shooting these handheld or tracking with a tripod?
Thx! What you don’t see is the hundreds of blurry photos to get a few sharp ones 😄
No tripod. All handheld. DOF kinda takes care of itself given the apertures you need at slow shutter speeds
Always wanted to go to Road America. Looks like a nice old school track. With a lot of places to take photos. Although, I think that’s changed in recent years.
I know at Laguna Seca, it used to be very photography friendly. But a few years back they installed tall fencing around the whole track to meet IndyCar safety standards. Which is definitely good for the drivers safety. Not so good for taking photos

Never used a star tracker before. Looks fun though!
Very nice presentation, Al.

Outstanding work, Steve! I have yet to try any astrophotography stuff.
