After seeing that cheap lens thread, I picked up a $50 Canon FD 50/1.4 SSC. It's a bit fuzzy at f/1.4 but sharpens up nicely. I need to do more testing. Shots below are at f/1.4 or f/8

Very nice photo! Funny, we have the same birds here, or at least very, very similar, and your description is spot on. It doesn't even help to just serve sunflower seeds, they still throw out 4-5 seeds for each one they eat...
Cross post from the Northern Lights thread. Too little time and I struggled with the settings, tripod etc., but it's a start. Hopefully there'll be a new opportunity soon.
