Crazy -- hand holding a 600mm, in the freezing cold no less!

And here I was proud of hand holding a 25mm!

I've learned to have gloves with handwarmers that allow me to still function with the camera. I am also acclimated to Minnesota winters . . . to a point!

Cool from all points of view!))))

+++

There is beatifull thread in our Sony forum re 5 great photos of 2022.
Quite a lot of incredibly beatifull shots and series in there! Our thread is always thermonuclear (with a lot of really talented authors), but that one is just WOW!
I had no intention to participate, but just could not resist))).
I choose not the best photos of 2022, but - as far as 2022 was first year with a lot of super-memorable thavels for my small daughter - most touchy for me (photos were choosen not by logic, but by heart).
I hope you do not mind me cross-posting (majority of photos were in this thread, but in different series). Plus I can add - here we do not have limit of 5))))

Thank you Barry for another delightful set of images.
I am glad you are fine, except some age related issues.
Heading for 75 in theSpring I certainly can relate to that.

Also many thanks for your kinds words regarding my GIF animations, much appreciated.
I hear you (preferring the slow motion type animation). I'll keep that in mind.
Sometimes though I want to convey how unbelievably fast these birds really are.
Their reaction time must be considerably shorter than ours, judging from high resolution images taken at 30 frames per second. The Sony ILCE-1 with the FE 200-600 G OSS is such a wonderful tool, capable of exquisite detail in space and time..

The GIF format has the advantage of displaying high resolution images of fairly short time sequences in an infinite loop. However GIF file sizes increase rapidly with increasing number of images. So I am often forced to use images of half, quarter, or even one eight linear resolution to keep the files manageable on our current Internet system.

Finally I am slowly discovering what post-processing tools to use to get rid of the erratic uncontrolled motions, typical of hand holding the camera and lens, that are reflected in a time sequence of images and can be very distracting.

Here is such a sequence of a Juniper Titmouse consuming a morsel of a Sunflower seed. It always takes the seed to a branch so that it can hammer on it, remove the shell and eat the nutritious inside.

For this sequence I used Adobe Photoshop to align the images, trim the edges, and finally crop to the desired size and shape. The raw files I first processed in DxO PureRAW 2 and then Capture ONE 22. The resulting GIF animation has only quarter linear resolution.

With best regards, Karl-Heinz.
