Bob, some very nice shots there. Some of them look very Zeissy to me. How do you like the lens, the feel of it? And do you micromanage with MF or how does AF work for you? Thanks!
Wilhelm - the shots posted so far are from a quick 30 minute walk from my office. All are with AF without assist using the 'small' focus box. Images that are wide open were shot in Aperture mode, all others in Program mode just to see what the camera/lens combination can do. Initial thoughts are that AF is a winner, the look is definitely zeissy and I'm looking forward to taking more time with the lens. I can see this lens being on my a7R quite often. The narrow DOF combined with high resolution sharpness at this FL will serve well in Street shooting, urban and natural landscapes. BTW - AF is pretty quick. The combination reminds me of the OMD-EM5 with the Pan-Leica 25/1.4 in M4/3 in terms of quickness to focus.
Early days, I know, but the comparison I am most looking forward to is between the Zeiss FE 55/1.8 and the Leica R Summicron 50/2 - IQ, bokeh, size, weight, handling. Not bothered about AF obviously.
Great, thanks Philip. Good point about focusing by wire, or not as the case may be. Of course, one big plus for the Summicron is it can be adapted to all sorts of bodies whereas the 55 Zeiss is FE and only FE.
Somewhat surprised at the performance of the kit lens... Considering it was only 200 more over the body only. Still debating on keeping the A7, or returning it for the A7R. Coming from a D800... I kind of miss the the extra cropping potential.
Got an A7 in the mail yesterday. Here is a SOOC Jpeg taken 35 LuxAsphNonFLE wide open. I have always liked the rendering of this lens, unfortunately i think there is a bit of smear on the A7 that will limit the amount i use this. Will try my G35, 35M-Hexanon, and V35/1.2 to see if I can find one that works. I may break down and buy the FE35 if all else fails.
FE 55/1.8 - Got it today and only have a chance to snap a few shots heading home (and at home). Wow this thing is little and sharp! I really wish the FE 35mm was a f2 or f1.4-1.8 My contax 35/1.4 is a lead weight by comparison.
Edit: Bob, great shots! Can't wait to take a walk on campus with this lens.
rji2goleez I share your excitement for FE 55mm F1.8! Excellent samples. Perhaps at some time you could compare it to Minolta Rokkor 58/1.2 at f/2.8 - 8? Thanks
