The bitter cold spell several days ago in California is a double-edge sword. It did freeze the cascading waterfall that I visited on this trip, rendering a look that I wasn’t expecting and yet, it was a pleasant surprise. But on the other hand, the sudden drop in temperature at high elevation froze the leaves. So, instead of turning yellow slowly in a beautiful way, The sudden freeze killed the leaves and turned them brown to my chagrin. At lower elevation, the fall colors have not quite reached the peak yet. So, the trip to photograph fall colors was partly ruined….. Oh, well, that’s nature, I guess.

Are you using tracking focus on these?
99.5% of the time I fail on these - the focus stays stuck on the perch and won't follow the bird.

I tried with all the AF settings and the result was not so good and did not manage to catch many in flight
I will try to test more with different things and different settings and see if I can get better results, on a day where I have a little better light also
So unfortunately I can say something more that can be more rewarding help
I saw that Geoff ( @arbitrage ) had taken small birds in flight but he is a specialist in flying birds maybe he can say something more helpful what settings work best, I believe in prefocus in some place where you expect them to come and shoot a burst
