Took the chance to go visit a very tourist heavy place in Shanghai called Yu garden, I went with a friend and met at 4AM to shoot a specific building then took a taxi to the bund and after photographing that moved over to yu garden.

It’s basically a bunch of old style buildings (that are now tea shops or gift stores) which surround an actual old garden, the place opens at 730 and gets packed within seconds and isn’t really a fun place to shoot given the sheer number of people, it’s also quite tacky in some parts as well like the “floating” building with plastic swans and flowers.

The garden and outer buildings are what we were after and this is what I managed to capture with the Sony ar73 and sigma 35 1.2

This is the exact spot where I dropped my polarizer. Before I could blink, it was swept away by the rushing water. I carried on and took some images for focus stacking. This is the resulting image during some nice side morning light. The stream leads from an alpine waterfall which shared last week and feeds the alpine lake. This spot is somewhere in the middle.

My son climbed up into this rock ledge. I thought it would make for an interesting shot. Tons of rock above him. Also nice sense of scale. 3 images exposure blended with targeted Color Efex adjustments. I should have asked to put his mask away but looking back at this 20 years from now, I'll remember the time.

More from the morning after.

My wife and I had driven an hour from Grand Rapids to the hotel in Muskegon, to get there before the sunrise. My daughter and son-in-law were a little surprised we made it before the planned 7:30AM meeting time.

I used the EOS R for most of the shooting, paired with the EF 50/1.2L. I have a smaller sampling from the a7R4 and EF 35/1.4L, so these posts won't go on forever.

This sort of shooting makes me appreciate and admire the portrait work of Fred, Gabriel, and Joshua (and others here) all the more.

Lovely set Jim - and congratulations. For me there is something quite touching about the first one in particular.
