Tibetan nomads have roamed the widest, highest plain on the planet since, well no one really knows for how long - certainly 2500+ years. They were and still are the driving force in Buddhism's major concessions to Bön, the ancient belief system of animism and magic that held sway across the entire region. 10% of today's Tibetans are what we call Bönpo. You could say Bön is the core of Vajrayana Tantric Buddhism.
