I've done quite a bit of DSLR astrophotography (with Canon 5DMK2), but this was my first time with the A7. I was really impressed with the quality and detail achieved with this small package...easy to throw in a backpack and take to some really dark skies.
Stats:
Tracking with Vixen Polarie star tracker
6 exposures @ 6 minutes
Stacked with DeepSkyStacker (with dark frames)
Processing with CS5
Thanks everyone for the 'likes' for my previous ice storm post... Very impressive how quickly this thread moves!
a7R with Canon EF70-200/4 IS @ 200mm f/4, which at close range is typically where this lens loses a bit of sharpness, but these files look pretty good...
We spend most of the weekend on the river Peene in eastern Germany, I had never been there before and was really surprised by the abundance of nature there, something I hadn't expected to find in Germany.
On the journey there we spent the first night not far away from the autobahn DSC03977 by Phillip Reeve, on Flickr
At day I didn't take many good images because of the harsh light, but here is one with 3 herons, 2 swans, 3 ducks and 2 cranes DSC04335 by Phillip Reeve, on Flickr
The second night was absolutely spectacular, by chance I woke up at 1.05 AM and saw an astonishing night sky, so I got out of my sleeping bag and started taking pictures at freezing temperatures. Meanwhile I could enjoy a concert of crickets, a peekaboo and fishes jumping out of the water.
My Canon nFD 2.8/20 is totally unsuitable for this kind of pictures because of serious coma at f/2.8 but sometimes one has to work with what tools are available. DSC04244 by Phillip Reeve, on Flickr
I had to work with my back to the ocean and big waves got me wet a few times, but these bubble selfies were great fun to shoot. Taken at Rialto Beach, Olympic National Park.
