Our yard guy told us that he discovered a "big spider" in our backyard yesterday. It turned out to be a sizable tarantula and it was crawling on the lawn. So, I got my gear out and took a series of images and here are two of them from that backyard safari

. I used a "pick-stick" and threw this hairy guy over the fence onto the slope behind our house afterwards.

Southern California is basically a desert area and tarantulas are natively present here but frankly this is my first encounter in real life and not at the zoo here in California. They are venomous alright but not deadly. Sorry for those that do not like spiders....
