Another image from downtown LA after dark but this time using the lowly 35mm f/2.8 lens. Seriously though, any lens at r/8 will generate virtually the same image quality. The light streak near the top is courtesy of a helicopter.

I hesitantly changed Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 1.4/35 ZE (+300EUR cash) to Sony Distagon T* 1.4/35 FE. I liked ZE version a lot, but I was not using it very often. Let's hope Sony f/1.4 lenses match well in rendering style of GM85 (Main reason for getting Sony 1.4/35 was that Sony 85GM looks so weird if combined to Zeiss C/Y, G, ZM/Loxia or ZE/ZF/Milvus images). Shooting experience was good and bad - good was that I did not need to touch AF/MF switch in the lens (as there is not one, but in GM85 they have added one). Bad was that I did not like manual focusing, I was very slow focusing manually and felt it little frustrating, much more unpleasant experience than manual focusing GM85, which is OK for focus-by-wire. Of lenses I have shoot with only FE2.8/35 and FE55 had more awful manual focus experience. Autofocus is fine on both lenses, but on my typical photography I prefer focusing manually.

I hope that rendering style is good match to GM85, too early yet to say, just been shooting once with this duo. Overall I like the lens render a lot, based on my limited experience. Even FE1.4/35 is expensive lens I did not assume it can do f/1.4 so well, boke is very good quality without typical wide open harshness and focus plane seems to have everything OK; even overall contrast is high wide open. GM85 tends to make images look dull when shooting f/8 or f/11, but FE1.4/35 did seem to be able to handle closing down well, even at f/11 image was still OK.

Sony Distagon T* 1.4/35 FE @ f/2.0, HDR(1,13s, 1/50s and 1/200s), A7R @ ISO 100, Hoya HD CIR-PL 72mm

Sony FE 1.4/85 GM @ f/1.7, HDR(1/25s,1/100s and 1/400s), A7vII @ ISO 100, Carl Zeiss T* POL Filter (circular) 77mm

Sony Distagon T* 1.4/35 FE @ f/1.4, 1/80s, A7R @ ISO 100, Hoya HD CIR-PL 72mm

Sony Distagon T* 1.4/35 FE @ f/1.7, HDR(1/25s, 1/100s and 1/400s), A7R @ ISO 100, Hoya HD CIR-PL 72mm

Beautiful shots, Chuck! Looks like that lens' IQ will suit you perfectly.

So I picked up a A6500 since I liked this new 100-400 GM lens and how well it works with the 1.4 x teleconverter. I also purchased the Meike Battery Grip for it and I have to say it makes a huge improvement in hand holding the A6500 for me especially with a larger size lens like the 100-400 GM. I'm really liking the results so far and without the 1.4 x teleconverter it makes a nice 600mm f/5.6 lens with it a really long reaching 840mm f/8 lens. Not going to be a great low light performer but

Samuli -- Looks like your lens approach is really coming together nicely! The FE 35/1.4 is a great addition for you. I've seen the images from Joshua's trips to Venice with costumed people that look excellent with that lens for wide open in all sorts of lighting. Looking forward to more!

Nice series Bob, I notice your 28 is up for sale?

While on a family holiday to the north norfolk coast i was pretty lazy with lens selection. I didn't have a wide zoom with me but had Loxia 21 and Sony 35. Sometimes i wanted something in between so used crop mode on the A7r and the Loxia 21.

Worked ok IMO. I know i could crop later but prefer to see the crop mode on screen so I can get composition right.

Thanks John and same to you! Yes, the lens is currently up for sale but every time I use it, I question whether I should. But I have this 28mm and the Zeiss ZM 35/1.4. Different renderings but very close focal length so I'm willing to let one go.

Jim, thank you! I do have more time for this wonderful hobby....uh, correction, actually obsession is more the appropriate term after becoming a retiree a few years ago .

I will be getting a Sony 100-400mm loaner from Sony today and I will try that lens out this coming Sunday for catching bird (or owl in this case) in flight. But in the meantime, here are some more or less stationary images of burrowing owls using my long Canon lens. The last one is the first image of a burst of 5fps when the owl took off vertically like a helicopter. That one is in focus but the subsequent images are OOF :{. Those owls are fast! I certainly hope that the Sony lens being native will perform better than the adapted lens. If it does, I will succumb and get the lens, regardless of the price .

Great owls Joshua! I used to live in the central valley for a bit and it is always nice to see those birds.

Here are several scenes from Hong Kong. A flat black Rolls-Royce, a man in a suit having a smoke, and two construction workers in bamboo scaffolds.
