Imagine how much weight I can save with the A6500+ 1.4 TC + 100-400 GM vs. the Nikon D500 + Sigma 150-600 Sports. That combo is 9 lbs +!

You will be amazed at the weight difference. I don't have the 1.4TC but I do have the A6500 and 100-400 GM and I love the light weight! And then there's the performance!

Douglas, I remember when I was carrying around the Canon 1DX with the Canon 100-400 and 500 f/4. That was a heavy kit. The A6500 with the 100-400 GM + 1.4 teleconverter will be a lot more manageable that is for sure!

While evaluating 85GM photos I'm slowly starting to like the lens. Rendering style is very subtle, and I don't find any "character" from the lens (maybe that is GM85 character?). Seems that lens behaves better at f/1.7, 2/3 stopped down, than wide open - majority of large distance boke issues I found are solved by this 2/3 stop. At shorter distances also f/1.4 is usable, but due to focus plane improvements I prefer f/1.7 also at closer distances. Due to mechnanical vignetting DOF is thick in corners, it takes 2 stops to f/2.8 to make the boke almost as thick all over image area (very normal for f/1.4 lenses, even Zeiss Otus seems to suffer from this defect). In addition to "portrait distance shooting" lens has been serving well also for landscapes, thou lack of pop/3D/zeiss-look/whateveryoucallit causes much more post processing work than lenses I'm used to shoot with, and some scenes just don't work which would have worked well with Contax G90 or Zeiss ZE 85 or C/Y Sonnar 3.5/100. What surprised me the most was that one could shoot landscapes wide open, at least from sharpness point of view.

As GM85 photos look really odd when combined to Zeiss C/Y, G, ZE/ZF/Milvus photos from same location. I started to wonder what wider lens to get for similar style. I don't like this style so much that I would need 3 or 4 lens set, 2 is enough for this odd characterless style. I'm seriously considering to try Sigma Art 1.4/35, as it's supposed to have similar lack of character (I'm aware about the the little chromatic aberrations and onion ring boke balls Art 35 seems to suffer, but I'm OK with them) - Sony FE 1.4/35 would be ideal based on what I have seen, but due to small stock in Finland, I don't feel brave enough to perform lens lottery required to get decent copy... Ideally I would like to combine 85mm with 28mm, but Otus 28 is just too expensive, and I feel 24mm is too wide as boke is the main thing for this set of 2 lenses => I prefer 35mm. Good ideas are welcome or if you think Sigma Art 35 is mistake let me know.

Sony FE 1.4/85 GM @ f/1.4, 1/1250s, A7vII @ ISO 100 - sometime even f/1.4 manages to draw nice background boke from this quite challenging scenario

Sony FE 1.4/85 GM @ f/1.4, 1/4000s, A7vII @ ISO 100 - quite flat rendering

Sony FE 1.4/85 GM @ f/1.7, 1/250s, A7R @ ISO 100 - shooting 10+ years mainly with Zeiss lenses made me to expect that the cart would somehow pop-up from image - took tens of pictures, but all of them are super flat like this; nice transition from focus to background boke and no distractions in boke

Sony FE 1.4/85 GM @ f/1.7, 1/600s, AR @ ISO 100 - closing down that 2/3 stop made huge difference in this scene, at f/1.4 rather difficult background was quite ugly but as can be seen f/1.7 managed to draw it without issues

Sony FE 1.4/85 GM @ f/1.7, 1/2500s, A7R @ ISO 100 - lots of separation, but 100% flat rendering

i would try to find an FE 35/1.4 that you can test or somebody else has tested. it definitely seems to match the look of the GM 85 better than the sigma, which has less emphasis on smoothness and very different color.

i don't have your usual subjects with the FE, but here's a few with it (all wide open probably):

Samuli, I agree entirely with your findings on the 85 GM, but would like to add 2 things. Compared to some of your lenses, like Contax G, the Sony 85 has rather weak contrast, and I find that I need to boost it in post (not talking specifically of wide open shots). Then you tend to get more "character" IMHO.
Second comment, there is one configuration when the GM 85 delivers a slightly strange image. If you shoot close to-mid-distance foreground with background not far behind, with aperture of f:1.4 to f:2.4, you get a very blurred background which "doesn't look natural" because it is too close to foreground for so much blur to feel natural. Just my $0.02.

Thanks - I forgot color, it's long time since I shoot with Sigma, and I already forgot those muddy colors (thou I would assume they have better colors in Art-series than they had in EX-series). I found one 2nd hand FE 1.4/35, but it's 2h drive and price is 1299EUR.

Good examples, I can see rendering style similarities to GM85.

Philippe, I agree on contrast - I haven't earlier needed the slider "Contrast" in ACR, but GM85 needs from +10 to +25 to reach "normal" levels of contrast. Also I found the "new" slider "Dehaze" useful on most of the GM85 photos. Zeiss is so easy, Profile, WB & blackpoint = done. Also GM85 does not work with profile I have shoot with ZE135, contrast and colors were too weak - I had to created own profile for GM85. All other lenses I use profile created for ZE135 or ZM35, it's good even for Leica lenses which don't have as strong contrast as Zeiss lenses. With the GM85 profile I was able to drop the need to add so much contrast.

I had not found this yet - maybe I was too concentrated to background boke as initial shoot was huge disappointment (I had gigantic expectations) due to lots of issues with large distance shots backgrounds. I also have always felt that I don't use foreground boke enough in my shots, and that is definitely area where I want to improve, but when I'm shooting I go back to old habits and forgot this kind of things.

I love all your technical discussions. I am a bit embarrassed to say I just like some lenses more than others without having the ability to articulate the differences. As you may observe from my photos, I am usually more interested in sharpness and wide depth of field, than shallow depth of field and bokeh. That is not to say I don't appreciate other objectives. On the contrary, the diversity is what makes this thread so interesting! I wish more comments were offered regarding intentionality. It helps to know what effect you are trying to achieve and how a particular lens or shooting style advances your goal.

Continued series is from Romsdal Open Air Museum, Molde, Norway with A7RII and FE 24-70 GM The interior shots were really dark! Those amazing raw files from the A7RII are great. I inadvertently shot one image in JPEG and it looked pretty good but when I began to process it, it looked like LEGO blocks.

Bob, I ordered the TC last Friday because my eBay buck was expiring and I had nothing else to buy with it. I was like, what the heck, let me get the TC first and get the 100-400 in a couple months. . I hand hold my Nikon D500 + Sigma 150-600 Sports mostly but can only do it no more than a minute at a time. With the Sigma decked out to 600mm, it's like holding a dumbbell with your arm stretching out. Hand holding the Nikon 500mm f4 VR is even worse.

Now my current two wishes are: (1) A 42MP e amount full frame that can do 10FPS with a 50 shots buffer (check out the latest rumored specs of the Nikon D850!) and (2) a beefier A6XXX model with two exposure control dials.

Hi Sebboh,

I really like your baby pics taken with the rokkor 58/1.2. Lovely rendering. I have a baby coming soon as well so I'm thinking of looking for one of these lenses. Are there any other lenses in this focal range (50-60mm manual or af) that you think are worth considering? Thanks.
