That's the point. It's about the value at the price point. With AF not really up to par for action shooting, I don't see a compelling reason to go native for this range. I currently have two other options for this range:
Canon EF 24-105mm f4 + Metabones III (big/heavy/AF)
Canon FD 35-70mm f4 + OM 21mm f3.5 (compact/light/MF)
I just picked up a Pentax SMC 135mm f2.5 v2 M42 mount. Missing now is a prime to fill the space between the FE55 and this 135mm. Something in the 90mm range. Suggestions in $200-$400 range?

Does anyone own both the FE 24-70 F4 and the Contax Vario Sonnar 35-70 F3.4?
Obviously the Contax is far cheaper, but I like what I've seen from that lens very much. The FE has OSS, autofocus, and a wider low-end...
I'm not sure if the FE zoom is the one for me - I've been shooting with primes only for around 3 years now! The reasons for wanting a decent zoom are obvious, but as I own the 55/1,8... would the 24-70 be "worth it"?
I've not got my A7(R) yet, but when I do go full frame, I'll be joining in the fun.
Taken with the A7 & 55. 1.8. I really like this combo, and its so much lighter than my slr gear. Tried to avoid buying the native lenses and using my M mount glass, but these files are so much cleaner it was worth it.

I put my Contax 35-70 on my A7 last week and put it through some shots...absolutely perfect for the Sony!! Some examples a couple pages back, but suffice to say, it's like having primes in a zoom! I don't have the FE, and probably won't. It's a little long in the A7 with adapter, but after going through my shots...totally worth it!

I agree -- the g90 is fabulous on the a7/a7r (and inexpensive). However, make sure you get a good adapter such as the metabones. The cheap adapters with smooth internal barrels produce awful internal reflections with this lens. They can be minimized with gaffers tape, but are difficult to eliminate completely. The lens is perfect with the metabones!

This is my first post and unfortunately, I use 500px to host, so I've pasted links to galleries below of two sets of photos taken with the Sony A7r in December, 2013 (DxO only recently released their module for the A7r and Zeiss 35/2.8 - which is the kit I had).
I wanted to say that the photos on this thread have been truly inspiring - to the point that I sold my D800, zoom/2.8 trinity, and a variety of other gear. Because I'm hopeful (or delusional) that camera gear has gotten to the point that my next camera/lenses could actually last me a decade (or more), I've decided to wait for the follow-up to the A7r and for a few more Sony/Zeiss primes to be available before committing.

300mm MF lens via 67-PK adapter + PK-NEX adapter. APS-C capture mode, in PP cropped about 50%
I know there has been disappointment with the way some Alt. lenses perform on the A7, but I'm amazed at the performance of my older glass on the A7....
