There's been numerous sitings of snowy owls in my area so a friend and I plan to try to capture some this weekend. I rented a Canon 400/2.8 for the weekend and plan to shoot with my 5DIII and 7D. But I just could resist throwing (figuratively) the 400 on the a7R and pointing it at the Minneapolis skyline from my balcony. I used the Metabones III adapter and while it would AF, it was getting dark so MF was preferred.

It looks a bit ridiculous!

Good set-up Bob!
I thought about attaching my 500 f/4 to the A7R but didn't have the courage yet...
I will try some astro shots this weekend.

Thanks. I've never used this lens before . . . what a beast! But I'll probably stick to a Canon body for this thing.

may i ask, what is the shutter speed you used and are you using a ND filter? what grade (how many stops?) is the ND filter.

just curious.

Hi guys, I'm new here, although I have been reading this site for quite a few years now.
Just wanted to say I am really really impressed with the images being posted in the thread, some fantastic talent on display here.
I've had my a7r for a while now, but work and newborn baby commitments along with some terrible weather I haven't given the camera any kind of workout other than trying to learn the controls and settings of the camera inside out. Hoping to get out with it soon and maybe even post a shot or two here, just don't expect anything to the level you guys have been sharing.

If I may, I do have a quick question. Some of you are posting photos with frames around them that have the camera/shooting details inside it. Is this something I could do myself? I use Lightroom 5, is it possible to do that with it? Are there templates somewhere I could use? I particularly like the ones that Phillip Reeve uses. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Apologies for interrupting the thread,

Neil.

In this case, I was not using a ND filter. Sometimes I use a polarizer and/or a ND filter, but not this time. After the sun sets, at F8 or so and ISO 100, the shutter speed got long enough. I think this was around a 3 second exposure. How long you need for the traffic blurring effect depends on the volume of traffic--similar to waterfalls. For traffic I use 2-30 seconds depending on how much traffic. Here, I used shorter shutter speeds in part due to the lighted billboard center frame which usually went to solid white on longer durations as it changed its display often.

Thx fir your kind words. Traffic is ugly, but adds life to a cityscape and is much prettier with longer shutter speeds.

hey Neil,

I used to create my frames in PS which took quite a bit of time and I couldn't read the cameras exifdata.
I have a tool now, which does step-resizing and framing with exif readout for me, I hope to publish a blog post about it in the coming week.

Hey Phillip, thanks for the reply. I have been following your blog, really good stuff. Look forward to the post you mentioned.

I have to say, you're actually becoming a bit of an inspiration for me. Your photography style is much to my taste, just wish I could get similar results. Oh well, practice, practice, practice, as they say.

Take care.
