What strikes me is that F/8 consistently looks that the sweetspot for infinity sharpness for the A7. I dont know why but a guess is that diffraction starts to kick in @11.
Would that mean it kicks in earlier for A7r, and what does that imply?

diffraction become noticeable but still pretty negligible going from f/5.6 to f/8 on both cameras. the transition from f/8 to f/11 is much more noticeable, but still not really objectionable unless you need a lot of contrast. imho of course.

SLR gear tested the ZA 55 f/1.8 on the a7R. Here's a relevant quote.
"We find the sweet spot for this lens -- on both full- and sub-frame cameras -- by stopping down between ƒ/4-ƒ/8, with the maximum amount of sharpness across the frame. Having extremely sharp images around ƒ/5.6-ƒ/8 should make this a great compact portrait lens.
At the smaller apertures, we saw diffraction-limiting softness come into play, although ƒ/11 was still quite sharp. It's only at the smallest of apertures, around ƒ/16-ƒ/22, that softness becomes more noticeable."
It's been cold and rainy since my a7r arrived. I hope to get out in the near future and satisfy my own curiosity on the a7r's diffraction limits.
Glad the posted images were of interest to some of you. I've learned so much here, figured it was time to contribute. I am happy with the 35/1.2, but the others bummed me out. To my eye f/5.6 is the sweet spot, and f/8 is pretty good as well. f/11 definitely softens things up a bit, and I just use that as the poor man's AA filter, an extra layer of protection against moire.
Hard to judge from a 1024 px sample, but I think the 35/1.7 Ultron is looking really promising. I'd guess the bike pic is taken at 1.4, and the corners (again, low resolution) seems to be holding up quite well.
