That’s a great reminder for you, eh?
No, just letting you know that your last photo, the light is very harsh and looks to be in need of more diffusing... I thought you might like the critique on it. Actually, looking at it again, it is a combination of having your main light set too bright and needing some more diffusion or (maybe a bit too far away from the subject).

It's not as harsh as a bare flash, that's for sure. It's very tough to shoot at 1.4 with flash.
My speedlite was set at it's lowest power possible and it was farther than I wanted it to be.
I used a 26" octa for this shot and I learned that in order for me to match ambient with flash at 1.4 (or a stop difference), I need to diffuse the heck out of that octa while keeping it close to my subject to get that soft look. They don't sell an extra diffusion panel for them so I need to make a custom diffusion panel or somehow cover my speedlite with something to reduce the output level.
Another thing I didn't like was the flash color temp vs background color temp. I should've gelled it but oh well, lesson learned...

So......is this the right or wrong way to use a flash?

its so hard to switch between this lens and the 85 1.4G. I used the 58 exclusively on my client mini sessions last month and loved the results.
IMHO the rendering is more or less the same. The 85 is a little sharper wide open. The 58 has a little more 3D rendering.
For me the 58 is a little more versatile, because I can use it in tighter spaces.
I find them too close to have both, I'll wait for a 100/2.0 or 135/2.0/

The 85G obviously has bigger (not better) bokeh and compresses background a lil more. It's definitely sharper but who cares about sharpness?
i care about sharpness lol. more importantly I care about a good balance of sharpness and character. the 58g has good sharpness form medium to infinity focus but anything near MFD and its poor. I can live with that though as long as Im aware of it to avoid it or accept it as needed.
the 85 will not leave my bag, there are times where it is very useful for me, when I want to blow the back ground out more and i still want to remain further out than the 58. the DOF fall off on the 85 1.4G is still a beautiful thing especialyl when used in close portraiture.
