The focusing issue is definitely Nikon quality control related. My 58G replacement arrived yesterday -- every shot is spot on (even with outer focus points) and very sharp. Needed +3 MFA on D610 and 0 on Df. I couldn't be happier!
I'm not sure I buy it. You still do have to afft and even mine is sharp before and after coming back from nikon i still miss a bunch. But it's not the lens fault. The folks here are right it comes to fundamentals and getting good light. When I get the right light I notice so many keepers. By far the lens I cannot love without :-).
In the hunt for my next lens, this thread has made me settle on the 58 1.4. Truly some artfully crafted images here that possess such a unique style and character.
After reading through the entire thread over the past day I couldn't help but roll my eyes a few times. Some people just love to pixel peep, eh? Nonetheless, I'm excited to add this to my collection with my 35 1.4 and 70-200 2.8.

Keep posting great stuff, folks!
Get it! It’s an amazing piece of glass. And that would be a perfect set except replace that 35 with a 28mm
Joseph, I'm never one to point things out like this because I genuinely never really care, but that first shot has TONS of banding in the sky. Did you push it too far or is something going astray?

Thanks for pointing that out, Jason. That's good because I thought it's just my monitor. I see that on all my D750 images and it's probably because I'm using a beta version of ACR to convert these. I guess I should go back to ViewNX until LR gets updated.
Any of you care to share Admin responsibilities with me over on the Facebook 58mm community? I think it should belong to someone here who regularly shoots with the 58. Jason is the obvious choice IMO, haha! But once I see the new admin is going to actually do stuff, the community is yours. My problem is, I'm more of a spectator than a player on the field. Need someone who posts often IMO.
I just started looking into this lens and shots from it. I have the 50mm 1.4g and had a question.
I am sure this has been asked before but why is this lens 5 times the cost of the 50mm 1.4G?
What is different hardware wise that makes this such an expensive lens compared to the 50mm?

The rendering from the 58 1.4g is like none other. Its great coatings also minimize CA. Ive used it a lot for portrait sessions because it turns the background to mush. All depends what you are looking for out from the 50mm ish range

Oh God no, I hate FB. The only reason I have it at this point is to harass my wife and because family is too lazy to go to flickr for my pictures.
Use FB to showcase your shots > get clients for paid shoots > buy 200 f/2
