So my answer to the original question is yes, The only point I use is the center point and I focus & recompose. Works every time.
I make sure I slightly move the focus ring after I shoot the first image; then I focus and recompose the frame again. That way I get two images with focusing recomposing twice. I always do this at weddings; saves me time from looking at the screen a lot.
I don't focus and recompose with this lens because the field curvature means that while the center may be in focus, there is a donut shape band around the center that isn't in the same plane of focus. Not that focus and recompose isn't good and able to get in-focus results, I have just had better luck using my outer focus points. Just another opinion

Completely the opposite for me. I focus & Recompose on my DF. I NEVER use my outer points unless I use my D3s and I need to shoot a subject that’s moving. In that case I try to use outer points but the ones that are closer to the center point.
I fire away my moving subject while holding my AF-ON with the point on where I need the focus to be spot-on.

Gotta love the flux of new owners of the 58G!
Well, I grew up shooting Helios 44 which is 58mm (best focal length ever!). The 58G is soooo amazing that I sold my 50mm 1.2 Ai-S, 50mm 1.4G, 50mm 1.4 ZF .2 and even 85 1.4 ZF .2 -- just like I always wanted -- one "PERFECT" lens for everything

So, twelve hours ago this lens was nearly impossible to focus with. Now it’s your favorite?
The focusing issue is definitely Nikon quality control related. My 58G replacement arrived yesterday -- every shot is spot on (even with outer focus points) and very sharp. Needed +3 MFA on D610 and 0 on Df. I couldn't be happier!

How did you get your replacement? I find I really only get super sharp shots with live view AF. Currently AF fine tune of +8 on my D800, center focus and recompose is my go to... and I still miss some.
