The D780 really does the 58G justice. D750 needed AFFT to get close, not so with the D780. And that's true of all the primes I'm using regularly, 24, 35, 58/1.4G and 85/1.4D.

Respectfully, that's either random chance or you're using live view. My D850 needs a +18 with my 58G, while all my other lenses are within +/- 5.
It's clear now that mirrorless Zs with on-sensor AF are best situated to make this lens sing.

Hello, I do use live view often, but I prefer the OVF for fast moving subjects like the shot above. Maybe chance or luck, but sure seems to be singing just fine to me. I'm most surprised by the 85/1.4D actually, but I did have it CLA'd recently. Another big surprise is the AF 180/2.8D which is tack sharp at portrait distances also.
And, the D850 ain't a D780, totally different cameras. I still plan on a D850 for the hi-res, but I find the D780 does everything well for me and the performance with my fav FX lenses is fantastic.

This ^^^ With my Z7ii I still needed a small AF fine-tune, like +1 to get it exact at closer distances, but it nails everything wide open now, whether close or distant.
But I just have to point out that to my eyes on my monitor, the subject's face looks slightly oof, while the ribs of her hat just past her face and the post on the bridge behind her knee look like near perfect focus? IMHO this image is a prime example of why focus accuracy with the lens is so important.

Regardless, great capture!
Check out the enlarged Flickr photo, everything is sharp as tack. I am using a 5k screen.

On my 5K monitor the line pattern in her hat still appears to be sharpest just behind her eye-line, though indeed it looks better than the site version above. However, the Flickr image is still rather low resolution and small and that could also be affecting my perception. Perhaps you can post a 100% crop of the original full image showing both eyes and the hat behind them in it?
