D500 at F1.4. This shot probably killed the sensor on the D500. I used AF this time and it hunted a bit to infinity. The sensor has a big pink smear that I can not clean with any method. It shows up as a big bright spot and a dark band.
Hello and buona domenica everybody, I know what am gonna attach won't qualify to this amazing thread but I need to start off of somewhere and I promise I will do better...
I am using, once in a very while, the 58 on the D800 which still seems to have focus issues, I have a D850 too which I will mate with the 58 once my busy season is over but I am eager to understand how to use this lens, which is the best distance off subject or if it takes to fine tune it on a desired distance, focus and recompose bla bla bla
I see both full body shots off a considerable distance and close up shots and both show amazing rendering, did you fine tune the lens for a specific distance or it renders the same nonetheless distance?
What's the best way to focus for portrait, focus and recompose or use focus points off the center as to not recompose?
I know, this takes a lot of trial and error, I took a few shots of my son a few days ago but I didn't realise (no, I won't put it on prosecco, beer and limoncello, I swear!) camera was set to very high ISO and as such quality is not great at all but I do really wanna make myself instructed before I will have the time and calmness to use it and, maybe, compete with my favore FL it being 85mm
Grazie
p.s. I won't recommend to read this thread and, to all of you posters, I am gonna send my PayPal link so you can help and fix broken bank account ;-)
Today bad weather and overcast skies got me a break which I enjoyed with our amazingly sweet dog and the new brush, oooops, lens...
This lens paints, doesn't take pictures, it sure takes quite a steep learning curve which I hope to menage once the busy season is over but it really is a hard pick between this and the 85/1.4D
58G is not sharp at f/1.4 especially as you get close but man, the rendering of this lens is amazing. I do have the Z 50mm f/1.8 but I hardly use it for people pictures. Here is a picture of my wife with the 58G wide open on the Z6.
I understand there is likely some sample variation in this lens, but mine is surprisingly sharp wide open, in fact often a touch sharper than I want it for people "of a certain age" (well, sort of anyway ). But no matter how you slice it, this lens paints beautifully!

PS: Gorgeous lady!
Thank you @gear-nut - yes, the lens can be sharp wide open and it is a lot more consistent with my Z bodies than the F mount bodies. You are right, the lens paints beautifully. Thanks again.
I am glad the 58 is soft, I would have regret getting it as I already have the 60G which is too damn sharp and would have ended up with two similar lenses

I think that next purchase should be a strobe and a modifier, I do really love photography more and more
