A few pages back I posted that I love my 58mm and the earlier version which is the 5.8cm. Nikon stated on release that this lens was based off of the Noct...guess the old 5.8cm wasnt a good enough selling point. Anyways since I was playing around while cleaning my lenses earlier, I took a quick shot of the 5.8cm with the 58mm.
Manual focus, auto focus...doesn't matter to me still my favorite focal length and rendering of a lens in my bag.
Just browsing this thread, and somehow the 35 f/1.4G ended up in my cart after noticing the $200 instant rebate. I guess I'll end up selling my 35 f/1.8G. This will give me 20 f/1.8G, 35 f/1.4G and 85 f/1.8G for my prime trio.
Might have to slip that 58 in there or consider upgrading to the 85 or 105 f/1.4. Just bought the 70-200 E FL a few weeks ago, so I guess I have the long end covered for now.

Tell me my 28G/58G/105E combo is enough for me!
I had the 28/1.8, a nice lens, like the 50/1.8. The 35/1.4 is different, like the 58/1.4...
Couldn't agree more! :-)
The 35mm 1.4 and 58mm 1.4 both have that special something, that you can't put your finger on, but just gives images a poetic look, that I just love. Both lenses draw in a distinct way different from almost anything else on the market.

I am debating between the 24mm f/1.4G and the 35mm f/1.4G to complement my 58mm. I love the 58mm rendering, how would the 24mm rendering compared to the 35mm rendering?
Thanks.

The 24G and 35G are very similar in rendering, the difference lies more in the perspectives these lenses allow. Both have beautiful rendering with a strong 3D-like look in the right light and wonderful creamy bokeh (not swirly like the 58G or 105E, though).
Many will say the 24 is the ideal companion to the 58 (35mm being too close), but 24mm is really wide for some applications. Especially for shorter camera-to-subject distances, the perspective differences between 24mm and 35mm are very strong IMHO. Personally I love the 35mm perspective, so for me that would be my first choice. YMMV, maybe try with a zoom lens to shoot only at 24 or 35mm for a while and find out which perspective suits your style best.

Would you pair a 58mm f/1.4 between a 35 f/1.4 and 70-200 f/2.8 or stick with an 85? Right now, I have the 85 f/1.8G.
The 58's rendering will make you hate your 85 1.8. The 70-200 is a very versatile lens and focuses faster than the 85 so it's a good option, but the 58 will also make you lust for the 105 1.4. Slippery slope...

I 100% agree about the slippery slope. I convinced myself that I needed a new 35 and then ...... fill in the blank. I'll probably just stick with my 85 f/1.8G for now as I really like a 35/85 combo along with a 70-200 for reach.

IMHO the 35 and the 58 share something in their DNA. This kind of special rendering. The 24/1.4 is more similar to the 85/1.4, sharper, fantastic IQ but maybe more neutral. However, I usually use them in duo according to their focal lenghts 35/85 or 24/58
I'm following the 105 1.4E thread and noticed that some photographers had said that the look of the lens is different on the D810 vs D750. Anyone notice any differences with the look of the 58 1.4 on the D810 vs D750?

Yes I have noticed a different look between the D750 and D810. Both are excellent, but they do render slightly differently.
Previously I had the Leica M 50 Nocti f1/.0 (Mandler) for portraits and its unique look. On the M9/M240 the lens was wonderful, and on the Sony A7s 12MP was also superb, but on the A7rII the look changed to a point where I did not use the lens and moved it on.
I feel the sensor design/in camera processing/with and without AA filter/ and lens combination will give you different styles of rendering and look. This I suspect it is most visible using fast lenses wide open with the likes of lens designs of the 58/1.4 and 105/1.4 that have unique personalities.
