BTW... doesn't the D3S have a base ISO 0f 200? Lo 1 is ISO 100.
How do you get to 1.4 in sunlight??
Easy. Use the sun to your advantage
I used to say cloudy day is my favorite for photography... not anymore. Sunny days, especially a 2pm sun, if used properly, is amazing!
AFFT at +11 after hours on the tripod shooting charts and tape measures. Looks like I still have some work to do. Keeper rate is going up, just can't seem to get the eyes in focus more often than not. Frustrating. Any suggestions?

I shoot in AF-C (continuous). Select focus point onto the eye of subject. Then rattle off 3-5 shots while holding down the autofocus (I use back button focusing). I find it usually focus brackets that way and you will end up with 1-2 shots perfectly in focus.

Thank you. Yes, I shoot in AF-C, back button focus, with the single point set to the closest eye. I have the shutter set to Cl but I haven't been firing off multiples in a rapid fire manner. I'll do that with the hope of better results. I'm stopping down a little too as capturing a moving toddler in razor thin dof at short distances is not helping my results or frustration. I just want to be sure it's not a gear/settings issue. Thanks for the help!

I just picked a DF... only 1/4000th... my D5 is 1/8000th.
Just this weekend I was at 1.4 on the 58 and backed all the down to LOW 1 (ISO 50) on the DF. Still showing overexposure.
I figured a 2 stop would solve all those issues... even at 1/4000th.
Hey Don!
Shoot anyway and pull down the highlights in post. The Df has enough DR capability to do that. The way I shoot, I'm ALWAYS at 1/4000. No issues. Love the Df!

Wonderful set! I'm so glad you repurchased the 58mm 1.4G, I look forward to seeing more.
I got mine today! This is one special lens, would take me sometime to learn its quirks. This has rounded up my kit, though I might swap 85mm with 105mm 1.4G at some point. Considering the price of 105mm 1.4G, that point would have to be in some distant future. Some of my first photos with the lens from earlier today. Light was absolutely horrendous, I think the lovely English weather has made a comeback after a brief bout of sunshine. Photos are nothing special, just random snaps
A little testing.... DF, @1.4 using a 2 STOP ND filter (HOYA PROND4). The second one was 1/4000 at ISO 64. The camera didn't give an overexposure warning.

In that case you can turn the effect down or off completely especially with a longer focal length like the 58 or 105mm. I have been shooting F1.4 lenses for years with polarizers and have never had an issue with it overexposing on a bright sunny day on a beach. Just a thought. Not many times I ever run into an issue with 1/8000th shutter speed @ F1.4 bare either.
If you follow the "Sunny 16" rule it will tell you that 1.4 at 1/4000 iso 100 is overexposed. I'm posting some 58 1.4 shots asap, kinda dissapointed with it atm . Looks OK online, but when printed it's a different story.
