Well it didn't quite turn out the way I expected. We had a disagreement over the price considering the age and condition of the lens so that is that..I will have to wait for another copy to show up on eBay or Gumtree! It is a little frustrating but I imagine one has to soldier through these things.
Went to a local shop and got to fondle one and took a few shots with the 58 that was on the shelf as the rental lens was stuck in NYC as the renter couldnt make it back in time.

Even though I usually shoot it wide open, sometimes you just gotta stop it down a little.
...or get an ND filter. I like the pose, but there's some heavy CA in the branches, I guess a ND filter might have helped to reduce that a bit, too. I bought a 2-stop filter to be able to shoot at f/1.4 in the sunlight, and it was a good investment.
editting a wedding right now
my partner shot with a 5Dm3 and was leading this segment of the shoot.
his exposure was too high and the dress was blown out completely, the shot was not savable in post.
luckily I was right there...
the DR from nikon saved the day.

Markus
I just did the same... I bought an 82mm 0.6 (2 Stop) so I can use it on my 105 F1.4 too.

Why a polarizer vs ND.... I don't always like what a polarizer does effect wise.
In that case you can turn the effect down or off completely especially with a longer focal length like the 58 or 105mm. I have been shooting F1.4 lenses for years with polarizers and have never had an issue with it overexposing on a bright sunny day on a beach. Just a thought. Not many times I ever run into an issue with 1/8000th shutter speed @ F1.4 bare either.

I just picked a DF... only 1/4000th... my D5 is 1/8000th.
Just this weekend I was at 1.4 on the 58 and backed all the down to LOW 1 (ISO 50) on the DF. Still showing overexposure.
I figured a 2 stop would solve all those issues... even at 1/4000th.
