You guys are killing me. I've been creeping around this thread for a good part of a year now which isn't good for the health of my wallet.
I had purchased a 58 several months ago just to return it after the focus was off by about 2-3" even after a adjustment of 20. I know focus isn't the strong suit for this lens but that wasn't something I could live with. I've since picked up a Sigga 50art but still again I come stalking this thread being the bokeh whore that I am.
I'm ever so tempted to pick up another copy from BH so I don't have to second guess whether or not the copy is indeed a USA copy or under warranty.
In the meantime, please keep up the posts so I can vicariously live through your lenses.
Those wheels are far too clean! You obviously don't drive it anywhere near hard enough
Nice ride - my sister used to have an E46 M3. She loaned it to me for a couple of days and it cost me the equivalent of 200 bucks in gas. Sure was fun though
A couple of quick shots from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade - spent several days around NYC last week and mostly shot with other gear, but pulled out the 58 for a few minutes...
I just wanna introduce myself - Hi, I'm Markus, and after reading through nearly all 193 pages of this dangerous thread my finger is nanometers away from breaking the bank over the 58G... Know that it's mainly your fault, Elijah, Jason Brook, Corey (Hardcore), Joe Marquez and Shawn (nextelbuddy) for continually posting such spectacular photography to this thread (and the LensLust Forum at Nikoncafé)! (Not to say that there aren't also many great pictures by other members! )
Keep up the stellar work guys!
I hope to contribute some humble pics in the near future, albeit I almost exclusively post landscapes online (to my flickr stream), while I think my strength lies more in portraits (which come mostly from my circle of friends or events, and I don't want to post them online without the owners' permission).

OK, I just pulled the trigger... couldn't withstand the awesomeness of this thread any longer.
I rationalized that when I order it NOW, I'll have it for shooting at my GFs birthday party next weekend - a worthy reason, don't ya think?
One question: for checking if I have a good copy ( ), from what distance should I take test shots - you mentioned in several posts the lens's difficult behaviour at MFD. Thx!

Congrats!
The lens in general can be tricky. I find the field curvature of the lens to be most pronounced at MFD therefore making the photo a bit harder to focus. Sharpness can be very high even at MFD but it does produce a "glow" that can be corrected a bit by adding contrast/clarity.
As you more further out to infinity, the field curvature flattens and it will get slightly better corrected with much less glow.
As for testing the lens, just get out and take photos. There are many techniques people use. Many here use focus/recompose. Works very well for them. Myself on the other hand, use AF-C mode. Change my focus point (reduce to 11 crosspoints on the D800) and take 3-4 images in burst mode. I find this cycles the AF slightly and usually gives me at least 1 or 2 perfectly sharp images even if the subject is off to the side of the frame.

Man, it has been raining here for two weeks straight. I'd love to get out and take some pics since spring finally arrived, but noooo.
You guys staying safe up there Corey? I know Fort McMurray is close to SK.
Ya, Saskatchewan is doing much better than Fort Mac! We are dry but nothing like the devastation they are going through!
Thx for the tips, will do! And thx for the warm welcome here!
In the meantime, I have found a way of showing y'all where I'm coming from (if you want to see) - I've uploaded some of my portraits and other pics to my "Top 15" page, so only members can see them. Portraits were taken with the 35/1.8 DX, Sigma 50/1.4 (non-Art), Samyang 85/1.4 and *gasp* the 70-300VR (sometimes what is on your camera is all you have ).
C&C is always welcome (maybe better via PM as it doesn't concern this thread).

Thanks for the thoughts! Appreciate it!
There's a handful of guys on another forum I'm on that live in Fort Mac. So far their houses are still standing. They fled north. The pictures/vids they've posted have been unreal.
