I would return it because if you ever go to sell it someone might think you dropped it or something.
After reading through this whole thread, I've decided to sell mine in order to get the 70-200mm. I need something more functional but will miss this lens very much. Maybe in another life. Thank you all for sharing your amazing images.

Worst decision, EVER> I sold that boring 70-200. Pairing the 58G with a 200/2 is probably the best thing I did this year.

These marks come from the lens cap. Happened to mine too.
One of the reasons I NEVER use lens caps. I almost never take care of my gear I use them as tools, not toys.
I use lens caps... I live in a desert, so it's too dusty
On the other hand, I don't think this lens is going anywhere, so marks are not a concern. It's just very annoying when these unnecessary marks occur due to design error while the user is still in the "honeymoon phase" so to speak

Haha I was looking through my 58mm pictures last night and couldn't do it. I think I may still sell my 85mm 1.8g and then keep the 70-200mm and 58mm. Where are you posting pics with the 200mm? I need to see that thing in action

My copy of this lens was purchased last week from an authorized dealer.
It has these two marks in the front end. Ever see this before on a new lens?
On the ring that faces you when lookin at these iPhone pics
Should I mind?
top pic, 12 o'clock, it's a ding in the front/outer lip ring.
bottom pic, 7 o'clock, it's a pull that is actually more a small section pulled up, then a ding.
very hard to put into words.
This is a lens design fault. The front cap can sometimes catch on that tiny lip. Kind of looks like an anti reflective paper or something. Mine looks like it has been hit with a whipper snipper.
Probably shouldn't be on a brand new lens but I wouldn't worry much about it.

I purchased my 58mm used about a month ago through CL. It was advertised as like new so I was kind of let down when I received the lens and noticed the same kind of bump marks and what looks like separation from the plastic ring and the lens.
I knew I got a good deal on it at $1000 but still it was supposed to be like new so I negotiated a $50 refund (hood also had an airline cracked clip, easily fixable with super glue).
Sounds like I was making a fuss for nothing.
