(Warning: First-time poster… so I don’t know if this post will appear properly… heck, I don't even see a Preview button...)
I’ve had my 58mm f/1.4 for less than a week, so I haven’t had time to do much with it yet (you know, working for a living and all that). My first day of photos (Tuesday) I could see that the lens was front focusing quite a bit, and in the evening I did some tests (high contrast images) and then set AF Fine Tune to +13, which improved focus substantially. Still, I know it’s going to take some work to master this lens. I still don’t have best technique to ensure good focus. And I did some additional tests at multiple distances today and have corrected AF Fine Tune to + 15.
I have a question about this lens… but first I need to see if I can display a photo here. I’ll try a couple of my earlier test photos…
So… here’s my question (and I have two examples that follow)…
I know that a fast lens wide open in a high-contrast, backlit situation is going to produce images with green or purple fringing. My 85mm f/1.4D tends to do purple fringing, but I haven’t been using it wide open; it’s usually stopped down to f/2.
I’ve been good and have been keeping my 58mm open at f/1.4. In the high-contrast situation described above, the images have (what seems to me to be) fairly severe green fringing. Lightroom has no ability to defringe these. Is this normal for this lens?
if i remember correctly, green fringing = front focus and purple = back focus...try more AF correction. Also, try shooting once with live view to confirm that the fringing goes away.
Took my son to an Easter egg hunt at a local park earlier today. The wait was too long, and we ended up with an unplanned visit to a very small zoo within the same park. And all I was carrying was the 58:

If this is normal, do I just live with it? Or are there some tricks I should know about? Or is my lens unusually “fringey?”...Show more →
If your focus point has green fringing, you're front focusing. If your focus point is purple, it's back focusing. I use LoCA (the green/purple fringing) to fine tune my fast lenses. The green fringing in the out of focus areas in the background is a fact of life with this lens, it's part of what gives it the "look".
Keep in mind, shooting at 1.4 in the middle of a sunny day will create some pretty craptastic results.

Thanks, Jason. I did use LoCA to do AF Fine tune during the week. On my black & white test sheet, the lines start to turn purple at +16 and start to turn green at +14. On that day outside, though, my AF Fine Tune was set to +14. It's set at +15 now.
Most of the green fringing in the pictures was outside of the focal plane, which was my concern.

It's a good thing I live in Oregon, then. Cloudy 80% of the time! But that darn bright yellow thing does show its face on occasion. (I actually dislike sunny days quite a bit.) I almost never shoot at f/1.4, so sunny f/1.4 is rather new to me - and I figured everyone in this thread would know the most about dealing with that.
Not at f/1.4 (sorry guys), but still was shot on the 58mm 1.4G. Been trying to "see the light" around me more. I fumble around more often than not, but here's one that I'm kinda proud of:

Alright gentlemen it's been fun but I believe I am finally ready to let my all time favorite lens go. Thank you all for the inspiring shots. If any of you find yourselves on Oahu, please feel free to hit me up!

Aloha,
Joe
...Obviously not your favorite, since you're letting it go
Why are you selling it?
