Make-a-wish asked me to photograph a young teen who wants to do a rap recording.
They wanted something with a little pop.
Here are a couple of images with the Nikon 58mm wide open at 1.4.
Processed for effect.
This shot of my wife and two daughters exemplifies to me what this lens is all about. Nicely sharp where it needs to be coupled with the creamiest of bokeh in the gardens beyond the gate.
The reason the 50mm is in here is because my assistant used it for his shots. Otherwise the percentage would've been much higher for the 58mm. I would say I use it 70% throughout the entire wedding day. As you can see, it's a lens I cannot live without when it comes to weddings. ...Show more →
Cool, yeah it looks like it is your go to for sure.
Did you gel the flash on them? They seem nice and warm, but the background is really cold. You know me, I rarely criticize, but that background is really really cold.

Yes, I gelled them. I did that on purpose, I wanted this specific look!

her hand is purple, regardless if that was intended or not it still feels like it needs be warmed up some with a temp adjustment brush and low clarity slider. otherwise I can dig the cross processed feel of the back ground with subject proper temp. Its a different way to drawing in the viewer to the subject.

I know... I know... but I was pretty close up... I didn't want either of them OOF. A TRAVESTY
You gotta live a little. They are on the same plane, if you get focus on their eyes you would have been A-OK. But when in doubt, to give yourself a little familiarity with the effect just shoot both ways its as quick as a slide of the finger and it isn't a fast moving shot. Live on the edge a bit or put the money saved from exchanging for a 50 1.8G into her 529 college savings plan
I think the people who will appreciate this lens are the ones who use this lens on a daily/weekly basis, shooting different kind of things.
If I would've had this lens a few years back when I was a complete gearoholic, it wouldn't last in my bag for more than a month.
And the bokeh just looks terribly busy, which people always describe as "character" when they show off the soft, unfocused shots from their alternative 50 year old lenses.
I just wasn't expecting that from Nikon's newest offerings. I was expecting something good.
