And the bokeh just looks terribly busy, which people always describe as "character" when they show off the soft, unfocused shots from their alternative 50 year old lenses.
I just wasn't expecting that from Nikon's newest offerings. I was expecting something good.
Bokeh is not a constant, it's dependent on the lighting, texture and distance from the background. If you find a shot taken with 58 1.4g that has a busy or nervous bokeh, you can rest assured that it would be way more hideous with another lens of the same FL.
Soft, poor transitions, busy bokeh.... doesn't sound like the lens I'm using. Given the images in the thread are made by a variety of individuals with different abilities & different tastes in the 'look' they are aiming for, then it's going to be hard to assess if the lens suits you unless you actually use it yourself and find out. If you don't like it, you don't like it. No big deal. I got mine by accident, someone else's regret which they listed on eBay in the wrong category as I later discovered. I had made the first bid fully expecting it would sell for more than I was willing to pay but nobody else bid so I paid less than half the cost of a new one. It was in mint condition. I thought if I didn't like it I'd resell and make a profit. But after a couple of sessions I thought there's no way I can part with it.
It still pisses me off how people judge the lens by these super resized images on here, even folks who own and use this lens. I'm not a noob, I know what sharpness is and what to look for in a lens... I view these images on my 27" 5K iMac at full screen and the RAW's come out amazing with images sharp at f/1.4

shot an engagement session and maternity session in one week. used a variety of lenses on both sessions but ill only show the 58 specific ones here.
havent finished the maternity session ones but processed 2 faves so far.
Dude, great shots! But there's no way in hell you're shooting at 1/1600 in direct sunlight. I'm assuming you used an ND?
thanks dude, no ND used. just ISO LO i believe it comes out to ISO 50. I usually use that in daylight shooting to shoot @ 1.4. Ive shot at 1/8000 before and still been able to bring back the highlights in post. I didnt have to on any of these fortunately.
I guess I am just spoiled by having lenses that you don't need a 5k monitor to tell whether they are sharp or not.
As for the bokeh not being a constant argument - there are characteristics that are a constant - and they are constant in almost every other picture posted. And the only reason it would be "way more hideous when shot from another lens from the same FL" is because the same FL is under utilized and there isn't a huge selection of premium lenses at 58mm, but I know plenty of lenses of similar FL that produce much better results.
Shawn, if my gear ever ends up in the dumpster, you're the reason
Edit - I have not been shooting much at all lately. Took a break after that wedding, then the e-session really burned me out. Now I'm getting really itchy to take the DF + 58 on a dirt path in the woods.
I don't really understand the hate for this lens. If you don't like it, why are you posting in this thread? This is the same with any tech thread. Apple vs. PC/Android, Canon vs Nikon, PS vs Xbox etc. Go out and enjoy what you have instead of trying to bring people down.
That has to be the most ridiculous thing I've read on the internet in a long time. If you don't like the lens or if you think it's overpriced, fine. But to say these images are ghastly? You take the cake my friend.

The hell?! Do you realize the more resolution you have the more flaws you see?
