Also would you travel with this and a 35 or too close in FL? Perhaps would fit better with 24 or 28.
I sold my 85mm after owning the 58G for a month or two. I'm happy with my 20G/35G/58G combo. For travel, I just take a 20G/58G and it's more than enough!

They're different animals. I went without an 85 for a while because of the 58 and I'm very glad I caved and added an 85.
On the wide end, I alternate between 28 & 35. 35 is much wider than 58, but the FOV seems pretty similar. The 28 adds that hint of perspective distortion that makes it stand out.

sold my 58 1.4G... I sold my 20 1.8G last week... the 200 f/2 will be next
everytime I sell one of these I think about Elijah
Lol, you suck! You clearly don't shoot events. I guess it's 100% a hobby for you since you're all MF. Or you're probably getting lazy and now shoot with zooms
FWIW, The 20/58 combo is amazing!!
Ok, I had been debating for a long time between Sigma 50 ART and Nikon 58. After reading a lot of reviews and looking at many sample images, I gravitated towards the Sigma and bought it. I have been very happy with it, but looking at how 58 had rendered in some of the sample shots, I could not resist trying it out. So I purchased one from a fellow FM'er on the B&S forum and received it just a few minutes ago.
I will get to a couple of sample shots in my next post. But, for this one, I like to ask you 58 owners out there if something I see with the lens is normal. Specifically, upon close inspection under a flashlight, I did notice some discoloration around the front element inside the lens barrel. Please look at the following two pictures to see what I am talking about. My guess is that it may not be real discoloration and instead may simply be due to lubrication around the front element barrel which moves back and forth when focusing. And the non-uniform lubrication residue around the barrel just gives the discoloration impression.
Any thoughts? Is this just normal, or is it something I need to worry about and possibly ask the seller to take it back?
Ok, putting my concern in my previous post aside, I mounted the lens, did a quick rudimentary AF fine tune, dialed +5 on our D4, and took a couple of quick test shots.
First, my non-scientific conclusion from the couple of test shots I took is that it is not as sharp as my Sigma wide open (which I already expected), but it certainly seems sharp enough to me (which I was concerned about). And it does seem to produce creamier bokeh than the Sigma.
The first three shots below are with the 58, and the last one is with Sigma.
