The Sigma art lenses are very nice, but the 50 is not the 58 by any stretch of the imagination.
Jason -- Could you please kindly inspect your 58, and see if you notice any discoloration inside the lens near the front element similar to what I had shown in my two pictures?

I would certainly appreciate it.
There's none. I'd suspect in your case it's cleaner from spraying the front element.
I agree with Jason's analysis. Sounds like some residue of a cleaner of some sort. There's a lot of fine threads in the barrel that can catch stuff and it's difficult to remove. I wouldn't try and mess with trying to clean the barrel. I don't have any discoloration on my lens. Besides that as long as the glass is clean, you probably don't have much to worry about and judging from your sample shots it appears to be fine.

Thanks guys for your feedback. I have been in contact with the seller and he seems to understand my concern and, thankfully, is willing to take it back. From the outside, the lens does seem to be in pretty good condition. So I plan to take it to Nikon in Los Angeles tomorrow and have them check it out, and depending on their feedback, decide if I will keep the lens or send it back.
It's crazy how this lens renders images like a medium format with an 80mm slapped on, especially Jason's first shot in B&W. If processing was identical to film, like Fuji 400H or something, it would be hard to tell them apart...

So I took the lens to Nikon this morning, and their technician confirmed what you had suspected, i.e., thankfully it was not any lubricant leak or anything, and was just due to residue from some cleaner that was likely used on front element. He then tried to clean it a bit but was not completely successful. He said I can leave the lens with them for a more thorough cleaning (which I would have to pay for) but even then they cannot promise that they can completely get rid of it. One reason they mentioned is that they cannot use stronger cleaners as they would risk making the plastic inside the barrel shinier which could ultimately impact the light reflection inside the barrel and possibly impact image contrast. He said I should just ignore it and go shoot with it...
New addition to the family, the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II. Perfect for outdoor events! I don't plan on using this sucker for weddings at all though.

Too heavy, too expensive and it would be an impulsive purchase. I'm not lusting for F/2 (and that is a lie) But the teleconverter should be good enough for outdoor events, such as graduations, sporting events, etc.

Quit being sensible. Everything is an impulse buy.
