The lens is quite small though. I'm wondering what makes this lens so ridiculously expensive?
Does it contain some super expensive lens elements or something?

After reading all the pages of this thread, I couldn't take it anymore and had to get my own 58mm. I must be mad since I already own three other 50mm lenses!
My copy is very sharp wide open and I'm thrilled with this lens so far. First few shots.
You guys are slowly talking me into getting this lens. But... then again I remind myself this is a huge luxurious item for me that I can't afford.. great photos everybody!
Also would you travel with this and a 35 or too close in FL? Perhaps would fit better with 24 or 28.
I think they're very different lenses and both excellent. I sold my 85mm 1.4 because I found my 58 to be more versatile and I wasn't using my 85mm much after buying the 58.
I liked the 24mm and 58mm combo when I had it. Focal lengths were far enough apart and both were very special lenses. I ultimately sold the 24mm because it was too wide for my style of shooting (aka I didn't know how to use it well!). I have the 28 and 58 now and it works fine for me.
i think the 58mm is one of those special lenses that people end up building a kit around. 35mm and 85mm is a popular prime combo..and then you get a 58mm and start thinking about what to change because 35mm and 85m are pretty close to 58mm. Then you end up with 24/28, 58, and a 135
