IS on canon lenses works with metabones III (we are on a Canon board right ?)

Mine is supposed to be delivered tomorrow - I understood that the A7r, due to the lack of the electronic 1st curtain, is relatively vulnerable to camera/lens combo movement on long exposures. Has any of you guys tried this out with your largish Canon lens(es) on sturdy support? Any result worthwhile mentioning? Thanks!

It is a 36MP camera, which is more susceptible to shake and Sony (deliberately or not) omitted this feature while the 24MP A7 has this feature. What's up with that?

Does depth of field preview work with canon lenses? I'm looking through the a7r manual and so far I have not found anything about dof preview. I would also like to know if live view depth of field preview works like canon's implementation or nikon's. TIA

There have been conflicting reports either way, one which even indicated MFT-type shutter shock when using image stabilization on a Canon lens (interaction between shutter closing and then feeding vibration into IS). I'm getting mine today and this is the first thing I'll be trying. Btw, if it is an issue it wouldn't affect long exposures but more the ones between 1/100 and maybe 1/8.

Sony calls IS as OSS-Optical Steady Shot. Zoom FE lenses like Sony 28-70 or Zeiss 24-70mm have OSS. It is not on the FE primes yet.

Sony has OSS w/ E primes on nex (apsc-1.5x) which has the same e-mount. Nex E primes can be used in apsc crop mode w/ A7(R).

Also Canon IS lenses can be used w/ electronic adapters and IS works.

Yes it works, you will have to put this function on a button anyway.

About metabones foot being parallel with A7R body, I just check mine, and I have 1 degree of delta.

I tried the ts17 and ts24 which are largish lens and did not find blur. I compared the 5diii/ts17 and ar7/ts17 on large gitzo, acratech ball head and pixel peeped. I found more resolution in a7r image than the 5diii, which suggests it is not a big issue. I tried it at 1/320s.

However, it is loud and that suggests a vibration and dampening. it is the dumbest thing to do for a high resolution slow focus camera. Sony has their head up their xxxxx in this design. It could have been avoided.

I will try it again tonight at various shutter speeds and watch through the view finder.

But buy the best tripod legs ballhead you can get, because there has to be some effect.

Hi Adam,
Thanks for your post. I really would like to hear your opinion on this aspect.

Hi Scott,
How about in the shutter speed range that Adam mentioned?

If you are using IS, it could be an issue. However I turn IS off for landscapes to it is not an issue.

And when I am holding it with IS on, I doubt the shutter will be worse than my body for vibrations.

Let me know if you have an experiment that would test this.

Hi Scott,
Thanks for your input and your offer to test this aspect. I am not sure how to do this effectively either. I guess, we have to evaluate (read: pixel peep) files taken under controlled conditions on tripod. The focal length of the lens used will also play a role, of course but in my case, I am not planning of using this camera on any lens longer than 135mm.

Mount your longest and lightest tele lens and make sure shutter speeds are in the 1/125 - 1/10s range. I observed this effect clearly with my 300mm f4 IS + 2x TC mounted to my 1DmkIV. I was not able to reproduce with my 600mm f4 IS and 1DmkIV, nor with my 5Dmk3 and 300mm f4 + 2x TC (the 5Dmk3 has electronic 1st curtain while the 1DmkIV has not).

i will try it with my 85mm 1.2 this evening 5diii vs a7r. You are right that it should show up more in longer lens. However its likely to be smaller on the 70-200 because its heavier.

IS is presumed to be for hand-held application and the problem as it occurs on MFT bodies like the E-M5 is that without an electronic first curtain the vibration of the shutter closing before the start of the exposure is feed into/sensed by the IS on the body or lens, and the IS reacts to that vibration as it would human motion but in unintended/undesirable ways, causing the IS to misbehave and produce photos with a specific blur signature. Someone of dpreview reported that this is in fact occuring on his A7R with Canon IS lenses but it hasn't be verified by others yet.

Sry slightly OT question but do anyone know if the A7/r can use Canon flashes? I have a 430EX and a 580EX II.

No Canon flash on the A7/A7r. They have their own hotshoe.

Well yes and no. Here's a shot taken with a 580 mounted on the A7. But what to expect in the area of ETTL, sync times etc?

It should work in manual flash mode, for which you set the "power level" on the flash itself. That should work with the 580EX II, but I don't know about the 430EX. You might be able to chose between first and second curtain synch, but probably not if the camera wants to 'talk' to the flash.

430EX works perfectly in manual mode on A7R
Same for phottix strato radio transmitters

Thanks Jim, and thanks Kiboost for the link. I will have to dig down in the 430 manual. The 580II can still fetch some money to finance this interesting Sony FF endeavour.
