It's a good point. I have a suspicion that's the boat I will fall into. I was initially thinking I would just be using it with my TS-Es....but the Sony 35mm is looking really nice so far. Since I really like that focal length anyway, I think I will eventually pick up that lens so I can have the option of a small walk around package.
If the 24-70FE ends up being good, that might eventually make it into my kit too. And come to think of it, the 70-200FE could replace my 70-200L if I really wanted to go all in....hmmm. Well, Canon will probably at least get one more lens purchase out of me when they upgrade the 45TSE.

Funny how many people vigorously ridiculed the Canon 24-70 f/4L IS when it was launched.

Well, one of the biggest complaints about the 24-105 f/4 is the huge amount of barrel distortion at 24 mm. (The Sigma 24-105 has exactly the same problem, so it looks like a focal length range related issue.) That is obviously fixed in the 24-70 f/4. Anyway, I will be shocked if the Sony 24-70 f/4 is going to be a lot cheaper than Canon's offering. All the camera companies now want to increase their product prices to make up for the shortfall in demand.

I am curious about how the Canon 24-70 F4 IS hasn't shown its worth. The known flaw is center softness at 50 mm, even stopped down. Apart from that, it is a much better lens than the 24-105 for resolution acrross the frame, CA, and distortion.
If the Sony Zeiss FE 24-70 is as good as the Canon except the softness at 50 mm, it will be capable of delivering the goods on the A7r.

I have been pondering about the 70-200FE as well, but must always remind myself about the greatest strength of the best white lenses from Canon: the teleconverters. The mk III teleconverters from Canon are highly usable stopped down 1/3 to 1 stop. If you are into stopped down use of long focal lengths, the Canon 70-200 F4 IS with the 2X TC mk III makes decent 400mm F/9- F/11, something I think I can forget with other brands of teleconverters.

Yeah....I had to use a 2x with a 70-200 once. Outside of that one instance I never have use for such long focal lengths myself, so I don't really have a baseline to compare to, but the results certainly looked ok to me at the time.
Also, I guess we should point out Sony does make a pretty good 1.5x teleconverter for their FF lenses...it's called a NEX

Whether or not it's optically better than the 24-105L, the price is just criminal for a slow ass 24-70. If it had launched at a reasonable $800 it might have gotten a lot more interest. The real worry is Canon will never update the 24-105L and eventually drop it altogether. Hopefully they are not that stupid.

Wow, looks like Sony Australia at least, is really going after the DSLR users. For a limited time you can get a metabones adapter for free with an A7R. This might give me incentive to get in early and save > $400, as the adapters are dearer here. $2345 seems like a great price with adapter. With the money saved I might that towards a native lens. Either the 35 or 55.

Deal apparently runs until March 31. I wonder if they would honor the deal if you bought the camera from certified Sony dealer in Australia? Apparently there is a voucher inside the camera box for a Metabones adapter (Nikon G, Canon VIII, Leica M) and Sony's own A mount adapter LA-EA4. Sony website strangely doesn't have details or even mention the deal, it's on the individual camera store sites:
