First... on the camera and photography: I am absolutely loving the files from the X1D 50C. I know that my camera is old by digital standards, but the quality of the files are so rich and filled with details. While I have been using the Z9, Z8, and other high resolution FX cameras for many years, there is something about the extra "real estate" in the medium format cameras that make a definite difference. In addition, with a camera that is slow to operate, I am spending time thinking about framing and format much like

I’ve said a few times that I think the X cameras are more a replacement for an M than a SL or GFX system. If they’re used for a *considered* style of photography there’s not much better.

I’m enjoying you b&w conversions. ANother strength of the X1D.

Thanks Gordon,...
I've been really enjoying the quality of images that I am seeing from my X1D. While a dabble in street photography, I am a nature photographer at heart and am always looking for ways to add something to that practice. Back in the day, I'd shoot Hasselblad 500-series cameras alongside Contax or Nikon film cameras. The 35mm was used for wildlife and other subjects that offered little opportunity to slow down. I now see that the X-series can be that counterbalance to my Nikon Z-gear.

Being budget limited, I am considering the purchase of an HC 120mm Macro + H to X adapter. What are your thoughts about how well this might play with the X1D 50C(i or ii)?

Beautiful Tim. How are you liking that macro lens? I'm thinking of trying a macro lens to replace my Sony for film scanning, espeicially medium format film. I'll want something nice and sharp.

The M645 120/4 macro is a gem. Might be something out there that MTF's "sharper", but it renders very well (imo). I had the little brother M645 80/4 macro, but saw enough work from the 120/4 to know it's a dandy. Jim Colwell might have a thought or two on it, as well.

I haven't used it for something like that, but I'm pleased with the rendering and sharpness. I mean the 3 medium format 120mm macro lenses you always hear tossed about are the Contax (needs a smart adapter, which isn't cheap and the lens itself is expensive), the SMC Pentax-A (I do have a little soft spot for Pentax), and then the Mamiya. I have the version of the lens that requires a smart adapter to control aperture. Mine was unused in box and legitimately looked like the description. It was reasonable, but then I had to buy the smart version of the adapter. The version of the Mamiya with the aperture ring often seemed more expensive back when I looked (probably because it is more desirable.) But the "A" version has a aperture ring, so that's the one you'd probably want to get. From my understanding, all the permutations of the Mamiya is the same optical design.

The "A" designator (iirc) is akin to an APO, the C and N designators are coatings, with the N being preferred over C in Mamiya lenses that aren't designated as "A". Again, iirc. Jim would be a trusted source.

Yeah, Jim would be the best source. It just so happens that I believe the "A" version...which I agree means APO, is also the one with an aperture ring. The later ones don't have an aperture ring, and also don't say "A" to my knowledge.

I have the second one in this list.

https://lens-db.com/mamiya-a-120mm-f4-macro-m/

So I guess I shouldn't have mentioned the "A"...but I believe that it also coincidentally is the only one with an aperture ring.
