Great to see so many new people in here! Very nice photos from you all. I'm too busy to give individual comments right now, but will be back.
These are from a Mustang car show yesterday. After a while I found the courage to ask this gent for a photo, but was so stressed that I messed up the shot completely (wrong settings including being in macro mode...). Irritating! However, somehow I managed to go back and ask if I could take a new shot, and he was a good sport and happily agreed. Composition could be better, but at least I did it.
How do you guys feel about taking photos of strangers? Does it get easier over time?
p.45 #2 · Sony RX1, RX1R, RX1R II and RX1R III Image Thread
Yes, Helena, it becomes easier by time and training. I'm sure you won't get the hood in the way for the man's chin next time. Small details will still often be wrong (my experience) but it does quickly become a habit to check for the worst ones (poles behind heads and such...).
I would like to thank you for all your other, and very well composed, images here. The winter shots have been inspiring to me.

Thank you Jonas! Yes, the car hood is annoying, but at least it doesn't cover his mouth or something. Glad to hear that it gets easier over time, because I'd really like to take more people photos. I guess I'll have to continue to practice.
Btw. RX1 is almost too sharp sometimes. In the full sized photo his face is extremely detailed. My boyfriend's mother won't get to see some of the original photos I took of her during Christmas - every wrinkle is showing.

Good for you Helena. It takes guts to ask a stranger for a portrait.
I just got back from Istanbul and even though the people were friendly, a lot of them would get angry when pointing a camera at them. I'll start posting images soon.

Jochen, hope you had a great trip! I look forward to see your photos. Sorry to hear that many people didn't like having their picture taken. I have heard that it is the same (or worse) in Morocco.
Since I have posted so much "weird stuff" lately, here's a landscape from December that I had forgotten about. It's another from my walks around home.

Thank you Bob! That is how it came out out the camera - all I have done is brighten it somewhat and added a little vignetting. The day I took this I was out comparing RX1 with my 5D + 35L. The Canon shot looks pretty nice too, but has lots of flare - RX1's lens flare resistance is very impressive. Overall it's clearly better than the Canon combo, even strikingly so sometimes. I should sell 35L, but it's hard because it has been my favorite since 2008. I have sold one of the 5Ds though and three other lenses.
Looks like you had a great day out with the camera. Nice sets! I especially like the last two in the post above.

I know what you mean about images coming SOOC. I've been amazed so far at how little I really need to do in post. Same with converting to B&W. I usually use NIK Silver Efex but with the RX1 I can simply hit the 'V' key (which stand for Voila!).

Yes, the camera often get it just right. I took some shots today in really dull grey light and the photos still look great!
However, sometimes they can turn out a bit too blue (easy to correct though) and occasionally they simply look wrong somehow (especially skin tones and textures in certain light) - in Lightroom at least. In those cases it usually helps a lot to switch to some other Camera Calibration than Adobe Standard.

Then tune it down... I assume some of the images are good and that you would make her happy by showing a couple of them to her.
Here is my better half, in real life having quite some wrinkles and imperfections just as you can expect for a naturally looking 50+ year old person:
She is content as she just finished a lunch we had at a restaurant. Typical casual shot on a whim. Sharp enough, but not too sharp I hope. Cropped, resized and then partially sharpened only before turned from a PSD to an s-RGB JPG in Photoshop. Part of the fun with the RX1 is, no doubt, the small size. Compared to my old (and sold) 5DmkII with the EF35/1.4 I have to say this camera is less obtrusive, more fun, and better at about everything but f/1.4.
EDIT: I have made a camera/lens profile with regards to colours and use it in ACR/Lightroom. It helps, and as you say, especially with some blue colours.

Enthusiasm should always be excused!
It's easy falling in love with the RX1, no?! It didn't take long for me to really appreciate the consistently very high image quality. Your images show that as well.

Very nice. I am noticing that the lens handles having the sun in frame very well. Contrast remains high and it rarely flares.

Helena, I often don't ask, or use the Winogrand technique of sidling up to them, camera not conspicuous, get friendly and have a short 2-3 minute chat - I am sure people will find you charming - and almost off-handedly say:
do you mind if I take a picture?
Even just gesture wiwh the camera, the RX1 is perfect for this, being so 'compact-like', unthreatening, casual, superficial. If only they knew. Always always give them a casual but meaningful thank you. This way you are not quite a stranger...
The idea is to have them not interrupt them 'being themselves' so you need your act together with focus ready to go and trust the meter. You can zone for what you want first - say 2 metres, then the camera is ready for framing. Check out the background and choose aperture/ISO based on what is wanted.
Human contact is rare these days, most people warm to a kind stranger. Culture plays a part, I often get accosted by young women wanting their pictures taken, that is in Tibet and Ladakh, Chinese also.
Jonas, you partner is lovely, and kind to permit you to post her picture. thanks.

Jonas, nice and relaxed portrait of your wife/partner! Sharpness in that one looks just right to me. Yes, I'll smoothen the ones I took of my boyfriend's mother before she gets to see them.
Bob, I'll say like the others said to me: Post away! It's great that this thread has really come to life. What an interesting and picturesque light house. I also like the photo of the birdhouse.
bpark42, thanks! Really like the fresh "lightness" in yours.
Philip, thank you for sharing your thoughts about photographing strangers! Good ideas. My problem is that I'm shy and also bad at small talk in general, so just walking up to people like that is hard. What I have done so far is just smile in a friendly way and then ask. So far everyone I have asked has reacted very positively, so I don't know what I'm so worried about.

Since they are closed on Sundays I used the opportunity to explore the backyard of a nearby car repair shop. They have some more modern buildings too, but I didn't photograph those.
If I read the text on the door correctly the office is only open for three minutes every morning.

As far as posting a lot of pictures at a time, I have always hoped that people would only post maybe their best 4 or 5 shots a day rather than flood the thread with lots of their own mediocre shots. Less is more, and I hate to see the great images get lost in a sea of the more mundane shots.
Hope that makes sense and I like to see this thread stay at a higher level than the norm here in the alt gear forum.
