i'm quite impressed by what i'm seeing for the money. i actually can't think of anything that looks as good for the same price or lower no matter what the size. both the lens and sensor look as good or better than anything else i can get for $3000, plus it's ridiculously tiny.

Yes @impressed by the images. Truly a inspirational and very capable camera. But $3000 can of course give you a chunky FF and a whole range of lens choices including a copy of your CY 35/1.4.

i wouldn't sell mine for under $1500 (and neither would most other people these days), which only leaves $1500 to get brick of a FF with a poorer sensor if we're keeping it under $3000 total. it's true i could get as good a sensor or as good a lens (maybe) for under $3000 but not both.

As Sony is leading the sensor tech race it means that without Sony it becomes sort of a tautologic claim :-)

The CY MMJ 35/1.4 copy I got was far less than your price, boxed and minty too perhaps I was just lucky. Regardless, for some that would mean a better lens. Of course, it does not make the RX1 lens bad, not at all. It's awesome and enviable judging from imagery here.

nikon uses sony sensors too and it's not like you can get a canon FF with a modern sensor for that price. you just can't get a current FF camera for $1500 even if it has a worse sensor. sure, you can get a used 5DII for $1500, but i can get a used RX1 for $2300 too.

my point was simply that the image quality per price is very competitive. if you shop used you can get a used 5DII or classic + ZE 35/2 or c/y 35/1.4, or a 6D/D600 + a non zeiss 35mm for the same price as the rx-1. none of those will perform quite as well as the rx-1 from f/2 on. the c/y 35/1.4 is probably a better lens for environmental portraits at large aperture (but i won't know for sure till i get to use an rx-1 myself), but is clearly a worse performer stopped down.

regarding the c/y 35/1.4 i certainly didn't pay $1500 for mine either, but that seems to be the going rate lately.

p.s. i realize this discussion isn't really appropriate for the image thread, so i'll just end by saying that the pictures here (and some raws people have been nice enough to provide me with) have convinced me that this sonnar lens is outstanding and i want one.

Here's a snapshot at a festival. DSLRs were not allowed (if you even feel like bringing one). Left the EVF at home. That way it looks just like a point&shoot.

I almost bought one from snowboarder last year for around $1200, the CY 35/1.4, but too much trouble with a non-Canon. You got lucky, wilhelm, it does happen, a a matter of timing.

But that great CY lens comes decades old, needs an adapter, only sensibly fits 700 gram plus bodies, won't have the all-aperture excellence or fabulous corner performance, handy macro (takes advantage of bokeh), AF (even if not great), have a silent/smooth leaf shutter, and come conjoined to the DR of that sensor. Coatings and three asph elements really help also.

It also weighs more than the whole RX1 plus its 'case', spare battery, filter and card. Its length is longer than the Sonnar plus RX1 body thickness, its diameter is as great as the height of the RX1 body. I also think on balance the Sonnar shades the CY in appealing imagery but loses nothing to it in character.

Then I almost bought a Leica Summ-R 35/2 E55 for around a thousand with similar issues as the CY - before doing the sums and realising the RX1 was cheap in comparison, and would give us a FF backup and do so much more besides.

To top it off, there are very few moving parts, the dials are very well made. How long will the leaf shutter last, because I suspect most of them will get *a lot* of work. The best way to buy one is from someone it just doesn't work for, who is a restless gearhead looking for blazing AF, who wants to get out of it fast before it drops to $1000 ;-)

Joe, I really like that set! Great mood and colors.

Philip, I too have been thinking about durability. It feels really well made, but you never know. It'll be interesting to see.

We have just entered my least favorite time of year, when everything is brown and partly covered in dirty snow. It is melting fast though and soon we should see the first signs of spring.

Thank you! I'm wondering the same thing. It's an odd name for a place that's so far away from everything. Nothing but water, mountains and drying fish around.

Dave, have you looked through the whole thread at the images?

I'll look through all the posts later today or tomorrow. I should not have judged the camera by only 30 or so images. It's still too expensive for me to consider though.
Has it been rated by DXO mark or reviewed yet by anyone?

Yes, DXOMark rated it 4th, just behind D600 which has the same Sony sensor. CFA's are thicker on the Sony which seems to have better blue channel sensitivity than my D800E. So only it's high iso performance was less than the D600.

Thanks for the comments and likes - Ron, Helena and everyone else.

Ron, thanks for the pp tips!
Phil, nice set, what happened to your RX1? Hope all is well with it now?
Helena, continually impressed by your Lofoten shots. #2 and #4 are my favorites from this last set. Did you also bring your 5D along to shoot?

philip_pj wrote:
Joe88, the carpet in the airport shot might not have looked the same with no AA.

Philip, I think a weak AA filter is a good compromise for the RX1 since it appeals to a lot of experienced DSLR shooters from the Canon or Nikon camps. Personally, I prefer AA less sensors and have had to deal with moire on my M9 for over 3 years, not an issue most of the time.

I don't mind it rated lower than the D600, but at least it doesn't spill oil all over the sensor

Jochen, great low light capture of the colorful festival lights! Yes, nice that RX1 looks like a point n shoot so you could take it in there.
Helena, more beautiful landscapes from Lofoten!
Yes, looks like a lot of history around that Electric Blue Cafe. Hope you keep shooting and posting here despite not being your favorite time of the year.

Thank you very much Joe and Wayne! Yes, I also brought 5D + ZE 21 to Lofoten (posted some photos here https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/860134/835#11448225 ), but I used RX1 about 80% of the time.

Joe, great set again! Inspirational family photos from both you and Ron.

Thanks Helena! Those 5D shots look stunning on the other thread! Lools like snow is still lingering in some parts of your countryside? Beautiful picturesque views on those two shots above.

Darrell, nice set.

----
It was supposed to be a normal day for many of us in Massachusetts yesterday. Schools were closed for the week, many people had the day off work and I was hanging out with our older son in our backyard, cleaning and setting up the patio table (but could not resist taking out the RX1 since it is so small and light )

As I was taking some of these pictures above, my wife called and told me that there was an explosion downtown, which is less than 10 miles from our home and less than 0.5miles from where she was working downtown. We were and are still shocked.

Boston is a smallish town, and almost everyone you know will have something to do with the marathon or knows someone else who is involved with the marathon either directly or indirectly. If it weren't for our 5 month old child, I would probably have been near the finish line photographing the marathon as I have in the past. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of the victims.
