Picked up another RX1R this time around, looking forward to taking it out more. Trying to shoot more and edit less, anyone have any JPEG setting they like for the camera?

Hey Mathieu18, a bit off topic but as an Rx1r user myself, I’ve been contemplating upgrading to the Rx1r ii. I know you scored one of the borrow lenses deals for the mark II version and I was wondering why you went for the Rx1r this time around? I’ve heard the rendering is a bit nicer on the 24mp sensor but haven’t tried the mark II yet.
How would you compare the two, is the upgrade worth it for double the price (both preowened)? I know AF is supposed to be much better, which is tempting for street use.

Sigh... after getting it I used it a bit, and decided I liked some other kit more so offered it to a guy that just missed the deal but that I’d been talking too. I actually ended up regretting it, but I’d taken payment at that point and wasn’t going to screw him over like that, so went through with it... I do rather wish I’d kept it now...
That said, a couple things I realized while shooting the RX1RII... I thought the lack of a flip out screen bugged me on the Mk1, and it does, but having one didn’t make it a whole lot more enjoyable with the Mk2. I thought I’d like the EVF, but I don’t always need it and leaving it opened bugged me. So I closed it but then popping it out was a chore, and the EVF wasn’t as big a boon as I’d hoped. Last, everyone talked about how much quicker Focus was, and it is better, but I think it’s just a slower focusing lens, still wouldn’t call it snappy. I don’t shoot a ton of high ISO, and Face Detection is good enough, I don’t need Eye AF. Basically if the Mk1 has a flip out LCD it’d be about right...
So for the price difference I paid (about 1100 vs 800), yea I wish I had the Mk2, but for double the price I don’t think I’d upgrade anytime soon, even at double the 800 which was a good price on an RX1R, I don’t think I’d spend another 800 for a Mk2. If a Mk3 comes out and Mk2 falls to 1300 like the A7R2 I’ll think about it but it’s not an instant buy for me. Till then I know it won’t benefit my shooting.

Thanks so much for your insights, I’ve been holding off on the purchase basically for the same reasons, I know it’s better on several aspects, but is it double the price better? I’m still on the fence on that.
Perhaps the mark III might get announced by photokina, so I guess I’ll just wait a couple more weeks and see what happens.

Default JPEG (standard profile with everything zero) had been a joy to work with, with auto DRO. Usually some minor tweak to the file get the job done. Unless it's high contrast scene, I find no reason to use the RAW.

There was no mention of the AF comparison. It is so much better in the II and worth the price difference. If you are mainly shooting landscapes and static scences, it makes no difference, of course. RX1 crawls while the RX1R II sprints!

I largely agree with you and went from an rx1 to an rx1rii and back again. I like the tillable VF on my rx1, which I often use flipped up as an articulating screen essentially). One thing I really noticed on the rx1r2 is the 42mp sensor was harder to shoot around. I can hold and get steady photos from my rx1 at 1/20 consistently. I needed 1/50 for the rx1ii. Given I shoot a decent amount of night/urban stuff, this was really a pain and I need at least an extra iso stop to compensate. I'd love to see IBIS on the rx1m3, but I guess that would increase the size...
I remembering reading the review at dpreview for the rx1r2. The rx1 sonnar is "unit driven," meaning the camera moves a group of elements, not a single element like other faster focusing lenses. Maybe another thing to address in the rx1m3.

It's a camera you kind of take it on its own terms, and be glass half full due to lens, size and IQ and so quiet. All this and the tilt EVF seriously help with stealth, which is why I bought it five years ago. Here is one I did with it, got a bit on it too: f2.8-1/80s at ISO 3200.

I did mention it in passing. I didn’t own them at the same time, but given comments like “The RX1RII Sprints” I was rather disappointed with the AF of the MkII. It tracks better and acquires quicker, but it’s still not fast or quick to me. That said I like MF too, so I’m not worried about it, but I didn’t find it’s AF to be a major strength...

Crawls, sprints comment comes from direct usage at the same time. It is possible that you did not set up your very used RX1R II for AF usage correctly in the short time you had. There has been a few Q users who have claimed that the Q focuses faster than the RX1R II.
When the light is very very low, the RX1R II defaults to CDAF and starts to crawl just like the RX1. This has been my experience.

There's no reason why Sony didn't put the IBIS in the RX1 series, but my interpretation is that they have perfect reason for the decision.
The lens and sensor combo was very tightly designed, and rear element is so close to the sensor. Sensor mount actually have shims to adjust the tilt of the sensor to achieve perfect alignment, for each and every unit (means unique setting/shims for each RX1). If the sensor going to move and tilt around to compensate the shakes, Users will start complaining why their lens suddenly become decentered.

Here's a snapshot from yesterday's early morning walk with Miss Abby taken with my RX1:
Note the catchlight in her eye from the pop-up flash and the small amount of fill along the right side of her face. These are the reasons why the lack of a pop-up flash on RX1R2 has (so far, anyway) kept me from buying one. <sigh>

It doesn't need to tilt - it just needs to translate as well as rotate a bit in the sensor plane keeping the alignment just perfectly fine.
