Although I have the A7RII and the ZM35/1.4, I am having serious thoughts of selling the ZM and getting the RX1RII. I just love how small the camera is and how amazing the files that come out of it are.

Yes, that is true. The size really does help when it comes to going out and deciding if the camera is coming or staying. I really do think the ZM is an unbelievable good lens though!

i like the rx1 lens better.
the zm is a little more microcontrasty, but for nearly any kind of shooting i prefer the rx1 look.

Well, that was fast... High amounts of GAS are indeed dangerous!
I just got myself an RX1RII that looks like it came from the shop. The guy bought it in December 2015 but then had it replaced by Sony due to the light leak issue at the end of August 2016 and barely used it since then.
Now I need to get rid of both the ZM35/1.4 and the FE35/2.8 to cover the hole in my bank account

Thanks Ronny!
Derek, I think it was you that shared a few tips on to remove the focus from the shutter button and have the AEL button do that. I am trying to set it up but haven't succeeded yet. Really annoying that it's a different set up than the A7RII for example.
EDIT: finally managed to make it work: AEL Button must be set to AF/MF Control Hold and on the front of the camera the dial set to MF.
What I don't like about this option is that I cannot have Eye-AF assigned to some other button and use it simultaneously (since the camera is set to MF on the front dial). Any work around?

I have been thinking about doing the same thing...once I can snag a rx1rii for 2k or under I'll sell my ZM 35. I used the rx1 as my primary camera for about a year. Loved it. Congrats--post and keep this thread up!

I like the RX1 very much, but I think that the ZM 35/1.4 is a better lens, at least on my A7ii. The ZM is significantly sharper in the center up to f5.6 and simply delivers more pop. I have added a PCX 5m front filter to mine, and it is now also sharper all the way out to the edges. For landscapes, it's no contest. That said, I can easily understand how one might prefer the look of he RX1, and you can't beat its small size. Size is the biggest drawback of the ZM, IMO, but not so big that I won't use it.

afraid not, i use one of the other soft buttons so AEL can be used for exposure lock, but there's nothing to be done about eye-AF as far as i know (i only have the rx1 classic).

the zm is significanlty more contrasty at least, which i don't like. i'm curious to try it with the pcx filter to see if i like it better, but without it i find the zm unusable at apertures wider than f/5.6 except close up. it reminds me a lot of the contax g45. both the zm and the g45 have tons of contrast and pop (zeissyness if you will), but they always look harsh. the rx1 has plenty of contrast and pop but still can look smooth and gentle. i've never taken a picture with the rx1 and thought "i wish it was sharper" unless it was due to user error. i've taken a bunch with the zm where i've said "i wish it was smoother" (i've said that maybe 3 times in tens of thousands of shots with the rx1).
i wouldn't say it's no contest for landscapes either, without the pcx filter the rx1 wins till f/5.6, after that it's a wash. with the pcx filter fred's comparison on 42mp sensors seemed to indicate that the difference was pretty minimal, the zm definitely has a bit more microcontrast.

As they say, it's good to have good choices.
I love the Zeiss pop from the ZM 35. If the contrast is too strong, it's no big deal to reduce it in post. I wonder if some of the differences that you and I see from this lens have to do with raw processing. I use Photo Ninja as my raw converter, and you probably use something else. The two programs may render quite differently. I like to test various raw converters, and I see this all the time.
