Lame kit? The LP-E6 is about $55 and the CF card is about $ 80 sold separately and you also get a small bag. It is a very nice kit if you don't already have those accessories.

It went down from € 3.299 to an easy to find € 2.930 since announcement here in germany. That is around 10%. D800 went down even more (from € 2.899 to € 2.450).
I still guess the price will match an "realistic" € 2.500 next summer, if not earlier (what would meet your startprice in USA). But we have 19% tax already included in all our prices.

It is obvious that there are big margins for the manufacturers in this stuff. After Nikon corrected their D600 price about 325$ with its first delivery after the 6D was announced, I am confident, both cameras will be sold at € 1500 - 1700 very soon (after the first 6D bodies hit the shelfs).

I guess we know what's a more reasonable price point now.

IMHO there should be no more than a $500.00 price gap between the D600 nikon and the 5DMKIII. I recently switched to the D600 from the 5DII. I relaize that the 5dIII is an entirely different animal. However, the sensor on the d600 is truly remarkable!!! It certainly blows away the mkII and from what I've read the MKIII, also. The build quality is not as good as the III, nor is the autofocus. However, it is far better than the MKII. I'm sure it would satisfy most advanced users and a very large segment of the pros, as well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed
that I never want to have to deal with the Nikon service department. I switched to Canon from pro grade Nikon when the 5D mk II arrived on the scene. The image quality was far superior
to what Nikon had to offer me. I accepted a far inferior body and autofocus, in exchange for better IQ. Now the shoe is on the other foot and so I'm going back. At least I'm consistant.
If Canon can't furnish as good or better sensors then Nikon, they will no longer be a viable contender in the pro-serious amateur end of the market.

Or a bad pricing strategy on Canon's part!
I dont know. I think Canon is fairly successful with their strategy. They got a large number of people who paid the premium and bought the body at $3500. Then as the price is going down, more and more people are buying it. Right now people buy it in a hurry at $2800. I am sure if it was released at $2800 to begin with then many of the same buyers who are buying it at $2800 now, would have waited for a while before buying it. Canon used to do the same thing with the xxD bodies all the time. 30D/40D/50D etc all got released at a high price like $1400 or 1500 for early adopters and then settled down to $1100 or so in a few months. They didn't do this with 5D and 5DII, but looks like they decided to go for this model in 5DIII.

Both Amazon and BH still sells the 5d3 @ $3200. I think ebay is great and all. But I still consider the pricing of these 2 major retailers to be the standard MSRP of the 5d3.

Someone should do some internet sleuthing to find out why these deals are happening ONLY on ebay, and only with certain authorized dealers.
Such discounts are not appearing anywhere else, including the same dealers on their main websites.
The 5DIII isn't selling very well at the 3500 price point. To move product, Canon is cutting shady backroom deals with certain high volume dealers. I've seen dealers selling the cameras as low as $800 below small dealer cost. They are being sold on ebay because selling the cameras below MAP would be a violation of their dealership agreement with Canon.
When contacted by customers, some of the stores claim that it is some sort of special ebay backed promotion, but that doesn't make any sense. why would Ebay voluntarily take an $800 hit on each camera sold? This is being offered as an excuse because these select dealers aren't allowed to say that Canon cut them a backroom deal that none of the other dealers were privileged to receive.
In any case, it shows tremendous weakness in canon right now. They can't admit they priced the 5DIII too high because the early adopters will feel thrown under the bus --- but they are sitting on a mountain of cameras that need to sell. Instead, they are throwing their small dealers under the bus by going behind their back with these backroom deals.

Just remember that the 5D3 debuted in Canada at 3799, and the Canadian dollar was fairly close to parity with the USD. The SRP dropped to 3499 within a few months but I think Canon (Canada) really left a bad taste in Canadian Canon users' mouths over the pricing structure.
Interestingly even though 5DIII sales are split in two kits (body only as well as with the 24-105 lens), yet even each of these kits individually has higher sales rank than D800. And if you combine the two kits then they must have much larger sales overall at this point than D800.
That may or may not mean anything but I wonder how people are quick to declare whether a camera is selling well or not without any concrete data to back it up.
