MS pushed tablets running a desktop operating system for years. It's not really anything new.
The point I'm making is fairly simple. If you want to run desktop apps with keyboard/mouse input and external peripherals, why not get a laptop? What advantages does a tablet really offer in that situation? Once you're carrying a bunch of peripherals, is the nominal weight savings even relevant? What else are you gaining to make up for the performance and integration you give up versus a laptop?
who says you want to do that?!? You're making up requirements.
I can use a notebook computer *NOW* without an external drive, monitor, mouse, etc.
The tablet swaps a touch screen for the mouse. It has two major advantages:
Size - You can hold it in one hand and pass it around a group of people looking at portraits to choose from
Longer battery life
Also, don't be naive. If microsoft is even reasonably successful adobe will be releasing versions of LR and Photoshop which are more tablet friendly.

There is no photoshop for ipad. The web version is severely crippled and try editing a 21MP image with multiple layers that is stored on the cloud.
itunes is a disaster IMO. I realize i'm a power user and not in the 99% of their user model though but in my case, I'm a former jazz musician and have a library of about 10,000 CDs, many of them jazz or classical. These are all stored on an external harddrive in MP3 format and encoded with tags for artist, title, song, etc.
itunes could only find information for 1/3 of my tunes. So I had 7000 untitled cds, 70,000 unknown tracks. I bought several different 3rd party apps which claimed to be able to do a better job using amazon's and other databases. I ended up getting another 500-1000 from the 3rd party apps.
Why the !@#$ couldn't apple make a slight tweak to the algorithm to utilize the following directory structure:
[Artist]
[Album]
[TrackName]
This is how all my tunes are stored and my current player (mediamonkey) is fine with that format. If the tune has id3 tags it uses them, if it doesn't, i can search based on other fields [artist][album][trackname]
It would be dirt simple for apple to do that. The reason they don't is that it doesn't fit into their cloud-storage business model.
Then, I tried to copy files from my camera to the ipad. I had to buy the camera kit. It still couldn't see videos on my camera. Then I had to copy the files to my desktop, transcode them into apple compatible format and use itunes to copy them back to the ipad.
Then I wanted to tether my Canon 5d MK II to the ipad but I can't because the camera kit dongle doesn't support it.
So, no thanks to the ipad solution. Apple's target audience are the ones who sleep in line to waiting to buy their products. Their products do not work for me. Might be great for others, just not me.

Apple used to be the most innovative and creative company in the world.
Now it's the most greedy and a complete opposite of creative. I wish I could easily transfer
all my mac software to PC versions...
Seriously, I would have NEVER expected myself to say something like that...

Isn't this thread better suited for the "General Gear-talk" forum?
Also, jzucker, since you are a software engineer it'd be trivial for you to write a script that could take a consistent directory structure and write the info to the id3 tag, no?
Back on topic, the Windows 8 tablets look interesting......but I'm not sure generation 1 will be that useful. The Microsoft Surface (Intel-inside) will be over 900 grams. Which is pretty close to an ultrabook/air in weight. Touch-friendly software from companies like Adobe won't exist for at least a year. If you have a need for a ultrabook with a removable keyboard, then the Windows 8 tablets make sense. Otherwise you'll just be frustrated, I think.

Yes, but that's the point. The itunes sync doesn't use id3 information. If it did, I'd be golden because as I stated before, most my tunes already have id3 information embedded.
Apple should have used the following simple algorithm:
1) Look up album in their database
2) Failing that, look at id3
3) failing that use directory structure with user configurable schema
Instead, they only do (1).

Personally I use a MacBook Pro/iPad/iPhone. My primary RAW editor is RAW Developer, which is Mac only. I also use Lightroom and Photoshop. I need the horsepower of the MBP for my photography work; I would never attempt it on the iPad. I do, however, use the iPad for work and fun: design sketching, note taking, writing, presentations, email, web, watching movies, etc.
At work I design (interaction, visual) primarily for Microsoft products, currently focused on Windows 8 and Xbox. I've had a W8 tablet since early 2012 and have extensive experience with it and I've studied a number of currently available apps. You have to distinguish between standard desktop apps and "Windows 8 style" apps (that use what was formerly known as Metro).
To run Lightroom you will need a non-ARM machine. These will be larger, heavier and IME battery life is currently a problem. Personally, if I were to have such a machine I would prefer a light, compact laptop. The ARM model will only run Windows 8 style apps and is intended to compete with the iPad and Android tablets. It will not run Lightroom or Photoshop or any other standard desktop apps. The "Metro" experience is a personal choice. It does some things well, and I appreciate MSFT's efforts to do something new, but personally I still prefer the iPad (and I want to stay with one ecosystem, and I will never give up my Macs). But let's not forget that the iPad is in its third generation. They both will continue to evolve and improve.
If you do serious photography you will always need a "serious" machine with a larger battery and that can process big image files. While the tablets are not just for consumption, you can create content on them as well, they do not have enough horsepower to handle significant photo editing. They will have smaller hard drives too limiting your capacity to store files locally. I also need a real keyboard when working my photographs.
Personally, the USB/HDMI connection is not an issue for me. I connect wirelessly almost exclusively except to transfer files from my Mac or to backup the iPad. Yes, transferring files is tedious, and iTunes needs a full revamp (it tries to do too much now), but I deal with it because the bigger picture is sweeter. I stream to our TV using AirPlay and I can print wirelessly too.
iPad, W8 tablets, Android tablets... nice to have choices. No use in barking about what you don't like about any given platform. Just make your choice based on what you do like and how you use it, and enjoy it.

That is a huge if. Microsoft has been trying now for a while and gotten nearly nowhere. They were late, and as much as I would appreciate real competition to Apple, and as much as I think that Windows Phone 7 is the second-best alternative, and generally a worthy competitor to iOS, I think that Microsoft just came too late. On top of that, they are also showing clear signs of not having any idea how to extend what they did for the phone to a decent tablet, or any semblance of a sane desktop strategy. Finally, you are much more positive about Adobe than I am. I own PS and LR, but I expect that Adobe's strategy for moving LR to tablets will be about as compelling as their mobile PS strategy, i.e. not at all. They are so over-protective of their business that they can no longer innovate properly, completely dysfunctional.

So Apple is no good. What does Microsoft do for you?
Btw, AppleScript+iTunes could fix your problem, if you were willing to learn how. It isn't Apple doing it for you, but a tool which can help you do it yourself. If you want to do that.

Haha, the arrogance I did write an AppleScript to apply EXIF to my MF lenses in Aperture (actually, I took an existing one and overhauled it, fixing a number of bugs in the process). I could give you that one, if you are interested. I am not going to write this one for you. I am merely saying that if you really want to do it, you can. I don't think you really want to do it. You want Apple to do it for you. And if they don't, which they won't, then you will take your business to Microsoft, who does diddly squat for you. Go figure.

Arrogance, look in the mirror dude. P.S. I thought I was in your blocked file?!? Stick to your word.
Microsoft doesn't require you to write software to perform basic functions like copying files, or applying industry standard ID3 tags to their own custom, proprietary format. Oh the arrogance...
Not interested in writing code to do that. Are you sure it's even possible? If it's as simple as you make it out to be, seems like there should be an app for that? But I bet there's an app for anything Justin Bieber, eh?

I use Dropbox to transfer files to / from my iPad. Quite easy and fast. I transfer them directly to my portfolio and the result is a very professional presentation of my work. Now I have no inclination of doing any post processing on my iPad, or in fact my laptop. That is reserved for my color managed desktop where it belongs.

Of course it's greed. There is only one reason they keep this environment so closed.
So they can control all the apps and charge 30% of each app sale.
They don't give the sh#t about consumers and their "experience".
Please check out their numbers. They make more money on apps than on all the Macs.
And they pay 3% taxes...
Before Microsoft self destructed they had huge profits and were "greedy". How dare them try make the most money for their share holders. How unAmerican of them.

Then you should stand back and applaud the nice integration of iPad apps and how easy the entire system is to use using only the touch screen. I can't wait to see how butchered the Microsoft attempts are. Wait until a driver cannot be found and you have to do hoops to try to figure things out.
