I think i'm going to buy a windows 8 tablet. Bought an ipad 3 and loved the screen but hated the interface (itunes just to copy files), hated the proprietary ports (no usb port, no standard hdmi port)
Looks like the windows 8 tablet will be very powerful for photographers. You can run the full version of Lightroom 4.2 (and photoshop cs6 if you need to) so for visiting customers and giving them slideshows, I can do crops and edits and selection of prints right from lightroom and then just import the selections back to my desktop when I get home and want to fulfill orders.

How can anyone have any thoughts on the topic until the device is available? I am guessing it will be larger and heavier than an iPad, in which case you might not want to schlep it along.

Because there are a dozen manufacturers announcing windows 8 tablets, many of whom already make windows 7 tablets and the specs and pix are already available.
Yes, it will be larger than an ipad but I don't care, as long as it's still hand-holdable.

Why not one of the fancy laptops already available, just over 1kg ?
Any recommendations? I recently bought an Asus M53SM. It's got an HD display and an i7 processor with 16gb of memory and a 256GB SSD but it seems sluggish. Wish I knew why. I swapped out the 750gb harddrive for an SSD and it hardly made any difference so obviously disk access wasn't the bottle neck.
At any rate, yes I'd consider an netbook with an HD display. I've considered a macbook air but I'm thinking I should stick with PC for the compatibility with existing software I already own.

I recommend posting on the Ars Technica forum. You'll probably find a more knowledgeable audience.
That said, running Lightroom on a tablet sounds like a hilariously terrible idea.
Why? The windows 8 tablets are essentially notebook computers with a touchscreen. Overall system memory could be an issue though. But a netbook is probably a better idea.

Everything is subject to change I will see what actually makes it onto the market, see which ones are actually successful enough to start up a decent amount of third-party Win8 activity, and see how compatibility works out across the various devices. Only then would it make sense to seriously investigate and invest. There are too many dead ends in this market.

And the key will be that it can run windows software such as lightroom and has a standard usb and hdmi port, runs flash, etc. no limits.
The ipad hardware is great but the platform, not so great for my use.
I guess you will need a mouse and a keyboard then, to do any kind of efficient work with Lightroom. And if you want to develop, you will need serious power too, which means greater weight and a serious battery. I don't see how this can possibly end up well It will be a laptop with an external keyboard in the end.
I think Apple realised early that trying to make tablets as powerful as laptops is a losing proposition. I would be curious to see if Microsoft can find some way to pull it off, but I am skeptical.

Actually the MacBooks are some of the best laptops out there, regardless of platform. I believe that Apple supplies all the drivers to run Windows on there, so why not buy a MacBook Air 11" and ditch OS X, putting on Win7/Win8?

An Intel Atom CPU running Lightroom 4?
I'm using the fastest quad core i7 27" iMac on RAID0 SSDs with 16gb of RAM and it's slow. You want to run it on an Atom CPU, good luck.
Yes, I'm running it on a similar system for *EDITING*. I'm talking about using the tablet to take out to customer sites for interactive cropping, slideshows, etc.

The MBA's generally have not so hot screens.
Personally, I'm waiting for the 13" Macbook Pro Retina. I have a work 15" MBP and it's good enough but I really want a retina display. The IQ on those things are Stunning.

Why is this forum so full of snide remarks?
The iPad is great for that, all galleries in NYC use iPads.

The ipad is a great toy but I bought an ipad3 and returned it. A large percentage of sites I visit (including whcc) utilize flash and i find itunes to be a frustrating interface to use when all you want to do is copy images to the device. Is there an ipad gallery viewer that saves cropping information I can import into lightroom? And is there something out there which allows you to flag images and then do comparisons between flagged images ? This is something I do constantly when presenting images to customers. If all you want to do is display a fixed gallery, I agree the ipad3 is top dog but if you need to then rearrange, crop, etc., I don't see a software package out there for ipad that can do that.

I am not sure about comparing, but there are apps like Leafsnapm PhotoForge2 and Photosmith for editing, including cropping. Photosmith is compatible with LR libraries.
