Why do you care if it is open IR closed. If you can get applications for less than $10, majority less than $5 what is the problem. I could see if you were a developer, then maybe you can complain...but as a consumer it seems Apple has created a very furtile applications environment that are very reasonably priced and all work nicely on the iPad. From a consumer, I find this a win. I really don't care if Apple is very financially successful using this model. It works for me as I have a ton of very useful applications available to e at very reasonable costs.

Because there are 10's of millions of IOS devices out there and maybe 10's of thousands in the future of the Microsoft version. Of course Adobe will put their entire effort onto the Microsoft platform.

Really? Isn't Microsoft's app store curated just like Apple's?

Yeah. Well I was also thinking that Adobe is going to want to make a tablet edition of PS and LR look and feel pretty similar on every tablet platform. The hope that the Windows tablet version will be any different is kind of a pipe dream IMO.

How can anyone have any thoughts on the topic until the device is available? I am guessing it will be larger and heavier than an iPad, in which case you might not want to schlep it along.

I had an ipad2 for a short while. Don't miss it in the slightest and never have. I've really never given it a second thought....

I now have a Samsung Galaxy Tab2, which for my uses is vastly superior. Only time will tell of course, but bring on what I hope is a fully functional Win device, with hybrid options of detaching the tablet from the keyboard and it's possibly - not for sure - game over..

Any recommendations? I recently bought an Asus M53SM. It's got an HD display and an i7 processor with 16gb of memory and a 256GB SSD but it seems sluggish. Wish I knew why. I swapped out the 750gb harddrive for an SSD and it hardly made any difference so obviously disk access wasn't the bottle neck.

At any rate, yes I'd consider an netbook with an HD display. I've considered a macbook air but I'm thinking I should stick with PC for the compatibility with existing software I already own.

Actually, I'd wait to see what happens in the next few months, but I have an Acer netbook that I love. Small, about 3lbs, 750GB HD, 4GB RAM, 1366x768, etc. and it was under $350 total (I enlarged the hard drive). It uses a low power AMD C-60 chip (will soon see a Z-60 variation in tablets) and while not a power house it runs PS CS5, LR, Office, etc.

In short, it does everything my larger laptop does but weighs less, and while not as portable as my Samsung/Android tablet, it does more. It's the right tool for some jobs.

How many CS degrees or decades or experience does one need to be able to discuss this?

I absolutely feel qualified to play in this thread and discuss the merits of the options...

Care to elaborate on how the iPad let you down. What was your main use for the tool? I find it for my use, presentation of my images, the iPad is wonderful and people who use it to view my images feel the same way.

Simply for my own interest I'm curious to hear how the Android tablet is "vastly" superior? How do you use your tablet device? Can you provide more context to help me understand your perspective?

Do you ever worry about the OS updates being controlled by the network provider and not by Google?

That's true... Jobs dictated that millions of people buy Apple products artificially inflating their stock price... or perhaps those millions were free to do so on their own accord?

I know it's a tangent, but have you seen the stock price of MSFT under Balmer?

Some people hate on Apple to hate on Apple, no getting around that and useless to debate against someone's entrenched hatred.

Then you should stand back and applaud the nice integration of iPad apps and how easy the entire system is to use using only the touch screen.

I think it really depends on your expectations .
If ease of use is one of your main concerns, and you never do any demanding tasks, then iOS is a good thing , iOS apps might be sufficient , and a touch-screen-only device can make you happy .

But if you are one of those 'power users', iOS is like going back to the stone age, and the 'integration' of apps is really just a crutch to hide the fact that you are dealing with a seriously crippled OS and vastly inferior programs, compared to OSX or any other desktop OS .
Not to mention the amazing lack of compatibility of iOS devices with pretty much everything, both on the software and hardware side .

I'm a Mac person myself, and don't fancy Windows very much, but if they come up with a solution that manages to combine the power and versatility of a desktop OS , with a truely expandable tablet, they got first shot at 'computing of the future' .
Which of course is something Steve Jobs said about iOS and the iPad, after painting Apple into a corner .

I'm not a typical user, but the cons simply outweighed the pros.

A better way of looking at it is what did it do FOR me, as opposed to what it didn't do; the answer to that is basically nothing.

With a dedicated studio I didn't worry about bringing images with me; clients would come to see what I was doing. I think ipads are great if you want to share your images in a more public space - after post processing, getting them into a format you can use, and dealing with iTunes that is.

As I said though, I'm not a typical user, and many of my reasons are technical, but some is just my resistance to apple's vision and goal for the world, i.e., 1984.

I use a tablet as an easy to carry, wi-fi only in this case, information access device. I have a 7" tablet that fits in many pockets (jacket, cargo pants, etc.) and is better than schlepping an ipad. I can put what I want on it, in virtually unlimited storage (takes 64GB SD cards), for the most part without constraints.

I'm an 8+ year iTunes user. For the most part, iTunes is untenable.

I don't like limiting myself to Jobs-approved, apple-think applications. I can go to Amazon, Google, Samsung, or lots of other places and get Android apps, and will be able to do the same on Windows. I'm also learning to program Android, which I can side-load directly on my tablet, give them to family/friends, and basically do as I please. IOW, I have freedom, which is not a word apple understands.

In the next few months I'll probably begin the same development process for Win8 apps (N.B. MS will control WinRT apps like apple does, which is BS too IMO, but win8 x86 apps will be open). Will it be a lot of work? Sure, but it will be up to me what I want to do, not up to apple.

Android/Windows have real file systems. Regardless of Jobs' war on the file, only those that drink the Koolaid think files are irrelevant (and many here do). Files will be with us for my lifetime, it's just that apple users won't be able to control what happens to them and will have to ask apple for permission to use one from the iControl, I mean iCloud.

Enjoy that..

And then there are some that simply lack the ability and capacity to understand. Go figure...

PS - have you ever noticed that those that call others "haters" are really haters themselves? There's a 100% correlation in my experience; they use a pejorative like "haters" to dismiss other people/opinions that differ from what they perceive to be the "correct" or "enlightened" perspective, i.e. their own opinion, yet they suffer from delusional myopia and can't see their own hatred. It's quite interesting.

Sadly, as soon as someone accuses another of being a "hater', that person has lost all credibility.

I don't think it's fair to classify quite many people here as "some" who hate...
I have owned probably around 15 Powerbooks/MBP etc over last 15 years.
I have used Mac OS based computers for much longer.
I did buy iPad3 when they introduced the "retina" display to see how good it is.
It's great but because of the moronic iOS it's completely absolutely unusable for me.
And I payed close to $1000 for it...
IMHO Apple is evil today. I'm not saying MSFT is any better. But Apple is the opposite
of the company I supported over the years. Yes, I have an iPhone and I ended up
getting the newest MBA recently. And I wish someone came up with a strong line
of products to kick their a$$ really hard.
BTW I think the excitement for Apple products is fading. Nobody talks about the new iPhone
the way it was all that mattered for earlier models. You can tell it's slowly becoming
another Facebook, used to be the sh#t, but now it's becoming boring and for old people only...

It's not up to me to educate people. Lots of people will stand in lines to buy..wait for it... a phone? Samsung has had some great fun with that lately.

Lots of people are just consumers, not understanding, or caring about what they buy as long as everyone else is doing it too. Some have minimal needs that are easily met, some like to be told what to do and what to think, some like to pay more for a device than they should because they're told it's the "best' and they're elitist. Marketing 101, covered decades ago in my sophomore year I think. Oh well, sheep and cattle pretty much walk down the aisle too..

Actually I haven't paid any attention to MS's stock. Balmer is what I affectionately refer to as a "bridge troll". I'm pretty sure that if he could be sidelined, or even put in a closet with a bunch of locks on it, MS would be better off. He is not an asset.

BTW - I've been a victim of advertising and marketing too. Most times, when I've come to my senses, I've regretted it. Some learn, some don't.

It is true that iTunes is bloated and needs to be broken apart and reworked from the ground up. I wish there was a true iTunes audio only app that was optimized just for that. There are sidecar audio apps that use iTunes and improve on it, but that does not solve the iTunes problem.

BTW most of engineers run Windows on Macs. Again, we design and build primarily for the MSFT ecosystem (and some Android and iOS), but they prefer the Apple hardware. Both platforms can co-exist : )

That's not true. The iPhone is getting more popular among young people. See this report.

The iPhone 5 sold more than ever before. The "excitement" is not there because smart phones are now mainstream; we simply accept them as a normal part of daily lives now. They are not "new." And there was no reason to make the iPhone 5 different just to be different.

If only people understood that many of those that "own" macs actually ran windows on it it might open some eyes.

People shouldn't blame MS for the hardware quality though. MS makes the OS, and 3rd mfgs offer a range of products to support it. Some are good/great, others are less so. I've had catastrophic problems with macs though, to the point that it was "back to the factory for exchange". I've never had that with any windows computer. What's the cheapest mac (mini aside)? $1200? How many people would have to give up computers if their minimum buy in was $1200? I think a lot...

I can run VS\Dreamweaver\Eclipse just fine on Win7, and have full control. OSx has exactly one redeeming feature IMO, and that's application install is easy. If I missed anything, let me know. Oh, and then there's the missing R mouse button....

Last time I checked, the iPhone distribution was 52% female, exactly the opposite of what they said, but I don't know the age range.

I would find it very interesting to see how the two groups (Android vs. iOS), regardless of age/gender, broke down on knowledge of what they were buying....
