yeah it does make me happy in a purely selfish way in that certainly no 5D3 regret because of the 6D and maybe i can still get good value for my 5D2 which i didn't get around to listing yet with so much shooting lately.

I’m hoping Canon has figured out how to get more DR in the new sensor, minimally just to compete with the better DR of the Sony/Nikon EXMOR sensor.
Wes N.
that would really suck for the 5D3 and 1DX though but then again it would make the 6D a lot better and it would give great promise for the 5D4 and 1DX II

Agreed. 1/200 is bad enough, but 1/180? That kills it for me.
Ha-ha! Yes, losing that very important 1/3 EV! Even 1/250, nice as it is, is not significantly higher for something like blasting daylight flash-fill.
Jerry Stillfingerz -- Thanks for bringing up the WiFi and app. Over the last few years, I looked into an hot shoe monitor (too expensive and too delicate), and bought an EyeFi card (plus a Droid Bionic and Kindle Fire), only to find the EyeFi way to slow to use as monitor for either device. I'd like an external WiFi monitor especially when I'm out taking twilight time exposure shots -- great to see some bigger detail than the camera LCD, or to review while the next shot is being taken! I like this feature, and after reading the DPR preview, I'm more interested in the potential for this unit.
Maybe I have low expectations! When I compare this 6D to the original 5D when I bought it, the 6D has much more to offer in terms of quality, LCD, controls, sealing, sensor cleaning, and overall versatility. And I paid $3200 for the 5D! It worked great for what it was, but how can this 6D not be seen as a massive upgrade in comparison? I'm only now about to sell the 5D. I suppose because I am getting by with outdated gear like the 5D2 and 1Ds2, that my expectations aren't so much in the realm of fantasy as some.
And like a few posters here, I dabble in the Alt lens user category, and that definitely leaves Nikon out of the picture (except for its nice AIS lenses).
EOS20 -- Thanks for the size comparison link. I see the 6D is very slightly bigger than my 60D, which I find very usable with the battery grip. So the ergonomics are there for me. But I'm still leaning toward a 5D3, or a later high MP/DR model. Still, the 6D is interesting to consider.

The Canon 6D seems to fit a niche most of the complaints aren't looking at.
1) You've decided EOS is where you want to put your money for whatever reason.
2) You want a body that will be supported for years to come.
3) You have $5000 to spend in total for body + lenses for the initial setup.
4) You like the look of FF photography, and do not want to go crop.
5) You are a slow subject photographer. Landscape, stills, portraits, and other subjects where you have control of the shot compose 90% of your photos.
That pretty much described me when I was first starting out, except I went lens heavy and got a Canon 40D instead of the Canon 5D because of the sensor cleaning feature. I should have gotten the 5D instead since I've had to learn how to clean sensors anyways by hand. And yes, the first decision I made was the brand. The Canon A75 was my first intro to digital photography of any sort, and I loved that P&S....Show more →
but the one critical point you forgot is then the salesman shows them the D600 and they get more af points, pop-up flash, probably better video, more fps, etc. for the same price
so how does this lure the newbie to the canon world instead of nikon world? it drives them right to nikon perhaps

In keeping with its 'slimmed down' feature set, the 6D's wireless will be 802.11b and it's GPS will be accurate to within a 25 mile radius. Expect geotagged results like "this photo was taken somewhere between the Grand Canyon and Sacramento.
The cynic in me says Canon released this model to drive higher-margin 5DM3 sales. The realist in me says Canon released this model to drive higher-margin 5DM3 sales.
wow 25miles is pretty rough, my ipad seems to get me to 150' or so

I doubt very much that a company like Canon relies very heavily on pro and prosumer dlsr sales when they sell milllions and millions of compacts, as well as all the other non-photo stuff they make.
But the fact is Nikon and to some extent Sony have both left Canon standing with their most recent models.
I have checked the 6D specs as well as I can and apart from 1 FPS, GPS and Wi-fi I can find no reason to buy this over my 5DII. The 6D is smaller and newer but the Canon tech hasn't moved on in four years....Show more →
I guess you never shot at ISO 3200/6400 and realised that ISO 12.800/25K would have given you better results and more keepers and would have been a great advantadge to get the job done?

I don't regard ISO 12,800 and above as serious ISO's at all

here's a summary quote from DPR - which is Amazon BTW.
"Overall, though, it's difficult to shake the feeling that the EOS 6D simply lacks the 'wow' factor of its main rival. Whereas Nikon seems to have taken the approach of taking away as little as possible from D800 when creating the D600, Canon appears almost to have gone the other way, *** removing as much as it thinks it can get away with at the price. *** The result is the kind of conservative, slightly unimaginative design that's become the company's hallmark. It's still bound to be a very good camera, of course; just perhaps not quite as good as it could be."
I've read many posts/threads on multiple sites. People are finally waking up to Canon, and the response is 85%+ negative. Canon has done this for 6 years now. I purchased multiple 5ds, including some in early 2006 and a couple in 2007, for $2100. New. With warranty.
Comparisons are fair as with all products.Expecting more, as evidenced by what other companies deliver, is not in "the realm of fantasy".

The thing is that the target audiance would much prefer gps + wi-fi over better AF. Or at least that what Canons marketing figured out. This has Prosumer witten All over it and should generate Big sales like the D600.
