p.30 #2 · Sony RX1 FF Mirrorless (Original 2012 thread)
There are a bunch of folks here touting Leica's superior resale value, but I'll go out on a limb and say I wouldn't be surprised at all if the RX1 is destined to be a cult camera that increases in value.
A) I don't expect it to sell very well at this price point, I don't expect Sony to make a ton of them, and I wouldn't be surprised if Sony gives up on the experiment sometime in the future.
B) I don't think there's another manufacturer out there who has the technology and expertise to follow Sony in this direction.
So I wouldn't be surprised if the ultra-compact full-frame all-in-one camera is an evolutionary dead end with limited supply... but it's clearly going to have appeal to a subset of photographers, who won't be able to find this particular combination of capabilities anywhere else. It's like this generation's Plaubel Makina...which is still shockingly expensive for such an old camera. Or to use another closer analogy, the Sony DSC-R1, which held value for an awful long time.

It may very well end up being a cult camera, but I suspect it will enjoy greater sales, particularly if the lens delivers big time.
I also suspect that some of the other camera makers can not and will not let the RX1 go unanswered. I think Canon, Nikon or even Ricoh will feel forced to bring something similar to market, if for no other reason but to prove they can do it.

I don't think either Nikon or Canon will answer the RX1, and I doubt they will have to. It is very neat, but aimed at an impossibly small market.
I don't think it would be about market feasibility at all in order for one of the big two to answer. More about saving face, showing what they are capable of and reasserting their position in the industry. Both have created such halo products in the past.

I'm reading reports that the European price is 3100 euro?! A store where I sometimes buy stuff also has it already listed for that price. Would this be true?

If you look earlier in the thread you'll see my link to WEX (UK) showing £2600 w/o VF.
Quite remarkable. The only dimension that really prevents it from being as portable as say the Fuji X100 is the depth of 2.74, due to the lens (and, of course the added height of the finder if you added one).

I'm talking about the euro Ricardo and normally in the worst case it's US dollar = Euro. When I look at other Sony cameras the Euro prices (just the actual numbers) are mostly lower than the dollar ones (sometimes more or less equal).
That's why I'm thinking this is insane. I'm def. not buying one for 3100 euro.
Safcraft, yes it's limiting. You'll have to use a ND filter on the lens.
