I was kind of hoping they would price it at the same price as the Sony Nex F3 which includes an 18-55mm at $599.

Why not NEX 5N? What does it lack compared to 5N or GX1 (panasonic)?

Aussie "pre-order" pricing...

Canon EOS M is now available for pre-order!
EOS M Body + Adaptor, expected RRP $899

EOS M Body + 18-55 STM + 90EX flash, expected RRP $999

EOS M + 18-55 STM + 22STM + 90EX, Expected RRP $1199

(The store this is from should have called them EF-M lenses in my opinion, or people will get confused with other "EF" STM lenses)

Happy shooting,

The adapter has marks for EF and EF-S lenses. Check out Engadget for pics. http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-eos-m-mirrorless-camera/

I thought that since it doesn't seem to be aimed at the enthusiast market (though that 22mm f2.0 lens is). Pricing at this point seems to indicate that it's priced like the Sony Nex 5N. It seems to have similar features to the Nex 5N (plus hybrid AF and most likely a better menu system) though of course lower price is always preferred.

It does solve that issue with pricing I was thinking of earlier. The price is above the G1X and close to the 650D/4Ti. I had doubts they would price it lower than G1X.

Pixel -- I didn't mention Olympus or Panasonic in my earlier remarks (even though they make a lot of glass, or mount a lot of AF glass) because they are not APS-C, as are the Canon and Sony I was mentioning.

It shouldn't seem so far-fetched to imagine shooting with adapted lenses -- after all, they will be AF Canon lenses. All one needs to do is get a framing on the LCD and press the shutter button. Maybe it doesn't seem elegant to you, but it is a huge step up from what I currently do, which is manually focusing adapted Alt lenses on m4/3 LCD screens at 10X! That's like a rodeo, but it gets shots in the can, awkwardly, but in the can and usable. The Canon should be a breeze, comparatively.

And, yes, in an adapted lens scenario, the lens becomes a major part of the camera hold to keep everything aligned and steady. That's Photo 101. Having AF and IS will be great!

^^ You can also enable touch-screen shutter release. Plus you have 31 AF points on screen.

I think you misunderstood me. I'm not saying there's any problem with using adapted lenses per se, that's a great feature, I'm saying the use of composition via a rear LCD is appalling. I've done it and it shite. It's easy enough to do with tiny P&S if the sun isn't on the screen and you are on a solid platform. One of the pillars of support for a DSLR is your face. You have the camera pressed against your eye, you are holding the lens and body with arms in tight and it's very stable. Having to hold a camera with large lens at arms length while battling glare on the screen, possibly have to touch the screen to move the AF point is no where near as stable. Might be ok if the adapted lens has IS, but many won't and Canon is philosophically opposed to sensor stabilisation.

BTW I have an Olympus OM-D with EVF and using alt glass is a breeze. I can just touch a Fn button and magnify the image in the EVF 10x. I agree doing this via a rear screen is PITA, but Oly give you the option of attaching an EVF on non OM-D bodies.

I have an Olympus OM-D which has an EVF, so I can use alt glass

really dont think this is the camera the ALT crowd is looking for,it should at least have a optical viewfinder or EVH,even an add on that goes on hot shoe.

Don't assume this will be the only version.

From Dpreview:

http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canon-eos-m

The EF-M mount is 58mm in diameter, with a flange distance of 18mm from the bayonet to the sensor. As the image above clearly shows it's matched specifically to the APS-C sensor size. So don't expect a future full frame EF-M mount camera - it's not going to happen.

I'm amazed the 18-55 is only 20g heavier than the pancake. I don't see how that's possible unless the pancake is mostly metal and the zoom is mostly plastic. They look similar construction. They actually look quite nice style wise.

Haha, no flash. I figured they'd cripple it somehow.

I wish people would stop using that term. When you buy a car do you say they 'crippled' it by not including the best engine that they've ever made?

Unless some big problem with AF or the new lenses comes out, I am going to buy this camera to give it a try as a replacement for my P&S. I had been contemplating getting rid of my EF-S lenses (60, 10-22, 17-55), but they might have a role on this camera ... especially the 10-22.

I am glad Canon made a first step into the mirrorless camera world. This is a move I was expecting, reason why I recently bought the nice 40 mm pancake Lens (very good quality and cheap). I am pretty sure Canon is planning to develop models for the enthusiasts mark et.
